What an incredible hole in the wall Thai restaurant. Delicious food. An amazing wine selection. Service is also top-notch. And the options are for every taste pallet. Just know that here, spicy, means SPICY! Will definitely return!
truly what an experience! We got there at 5:10PM on a saturday, and we got the last two seats in the first seating at a communal table. It is a very tight space, but the atmosphere, smells, and colors really bring me back to thailand. we got the mango salad to start and it was INSANELY spicy- i couldn’t actually eat more than a bite. it was also very fishy, but i appreciate the dish in its flavors- it just wasn’t for me. we tried a bit of the fried rice, and it was more of a salad with rice, but very good. We got the panaag chicken which was recommended by the waitress and i loved that. the thai basil in it was so good and the flavor was spot on- the chicken was super juicy & tender. It was very spicy after a few bites, but not as spicy as the mango salad. we also got the beef shank and it was on the sweeter side with some coconut cream, but it was so tasty. the beef was a bit chewier, but the flavor was so delicious & not as spicy.
they had a really big list of beers & wines— but they didn’t give us a glass for the beer… not a big deal, but definitely expect no frills when you come here, but amazing flavors & food! we were spiced out of our minds, but in a good way. highly recommend & would love to come back!
Took us a while to get a spot at this place but we finally did! We came a few times and the wait was about 2 hours, I’d recommend going on a weekday or getting there early. The food was delicious and there’s a base spice for every dish so be prepared if you don’t like spicy. I’d come back here in a heartbeat - the waiting staff did an excellent job with their recommendations!
Discovered my favorite Thai place in New York!! The dishes and flavors are very unique, you won’t find your standard pad thai or Tom yum here. We got the fried sea bream and loved it. The fish was tender and seasoning was delicious.also recommend the chicken thigh red curry and the hung le.
PS, The crab cake was brutally spicy (for me). Service was quick and the portions were big.
I know. I was warned. But some of the dishes were way too spicy. And I ordered a dish that wasn't marked spicy but turned out to be quite spicy.
The flavors were quite good but eventually my face couldn't handle it anymore so I wasn't able to finish my meal because of the pain.
The service is attentive and fun. They checked with us several times about the spice and advised I don't drink water because it makes the spice worse.
The whole restaurant is very cramped and claustrophobic. Other than the colorful flatware and tabletops, it also felt pretty sparsely decorated. It feels like it's having a little identity crisis between being just casual / homey and more vibrant / artsy.
Food was phenomenal. We had a pork belly dish that was amazing and a couple curry dishes with chicken and pork. The flavors are very rich, with curries and fish sauce and lemongrass that brings me back to Thailand and Southeast Asia. We waited 30 min at a bar nearby. Worth it! I would probably suggest going earlier as they sell out of many dishes later in the day.
Ugly Baby Thai Restaurant delivers an exceptional dining experience that tantalizes the taste buds and engages the senses in a harmonious blend of culinary craftsmanship and ambient aesthetics. On a recent visit, three dishes stood out for their masterful execution and balance: the Fried Turmeric Sea Bream, Cumin Beef Shank Panang Nuer, and Fried Rice.
Each dish showcased a remarkable harmony of flavors, textures, and spiciness, carefully calibrated to a medium level of spice that was enough to entice without overwhelming. The Fried Turmeric Sea Bream was a revelation, its crispy exterior giving way to succulent flesh, elevated by the earthy warmth of turmeric. The Cumin Beef Shank Panang Nuer offered a robust cumin flavor that married beautifully with the rich, coconut-based Panang curry, while the Fried Rice provided a comforting base that tied all the flavors together with its simplicity and versatility.
Beyond the culinary delights, Ugly Baby’s ambiance adds significantly to its charm. The vivid colors and minimal pop interior design create a visually appealing space that is both inviting and stylish. Coupled with the energizing beats of EDM music, the restaurant crafts a vibrant atmosphere that complements its dynamic menu.
Ugly Baby Thai Restaurant is a testament to the beauty of balance in both its cuisine and its setting. It’s a place where every element, from the spice levels in its dishes to the decor and music, is thoughtfully curated to provide an enriching dining experience. Whether you’re a connoisseur of Thai cuisine or seeking an introduction to its rich flavors and traditions, Ugly Baby promises an unforgettable journey.
It's definitely a must try place.
Came in on a Friday and you must have a reservation, else you probably will need to order take out.
Sampled their winter menu with recommendations from the staff. Got the kao klook kapi (similiar to fried rice), mai sub nook (spicy curry) and pla tod Kamin (sea bream). Definitely enough for 3 people.
The fried rice was delicious and hint of sweetness to it. The star in my opinion was the sea bream. Beautifully fried and crispy.
Spicy is very spicy (speaking as someone who can handle spicy). Would need to train to take on the "brutally spicy" or "stay away spicy".
The decor is whimsical and seating can be tight. Was sharing a table with another group. Just be aware.
