Located in Chinatown, I stopped by for a late afternoon lunch. It was a Sunday afternoon and I was seated immediately and served complimentary pandan tea. This place is totally vegan despite dishes that are labeled otherwise.
I had the phõ and it was flavorful. It was loaded with tons of items that I assume would replicate meat. A couple of items I couldn't eat because it did feel like it was the texture of meat products (gelatinous) in the items. The business seems to have repeat customers so service was a little slower towards me. But I was in no rush so didn't mind and was apologized to. No biggie as everyone was celebrating Chinese New Year.
The restaurant itself is small and quaint with eclectic decorations but I will definitely return.
Absolutely love this vegan spot! My partner and I are practically regulars going almost every weekend. Most of the time We start with the fried Wontons. The curry is amazing, beef stew is delicious and the sugar cane juice and Vietnamese coffee are the perfect sips to round off the meal. My partner’s favorites are pho, fried rice and chicken with rice. It's become our go-to spot for a reason, delicious food and great service. Even though English is not their first language they always find a way to communicate kindly and make you feel like family.
The best vegan Asian restaurant on Oahu. Legit vegan Vietnamese that makes me happy to eat the food of my childhood without the meat. Legit experience too. One of my go to places on Oahu. FYI, most items are gluten free (rice and soy being predominant ingredients) except for spring rolls. Parking is a butt. I try to park at public paid lots because street parking is hard to find.
Fantastic menu - delicious, healthy, original & fresh. A family run restaurant with lovely service and ‘vibe’. Added bonus is the excellent views on Chinatown through the windows. We enjoyed plate meals, soup and excellent coconut water/ Vietnamese coffee. We especially enjoyed the interesting vegetable selection. Worth visiting the great small galleries and shops in & around Chinatown then treating yourself to a long lunch here.
I had the pleasure of dining at the Vietnamese Vegan Restaurant and was thoroughly impressed by the experience. Despite its modest size, the restaurant exuded a lot of heart, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Our meal included the delectable fried rice and refreshing summer rolls, both of which were exceptionally flavorful and satisfying.
The staff's exceptional courtesy was a highlight, even though there was a language barrier. Their attentiveness and dedication to providing a delightful dining experience were truly commendable. As a haven for vegans, this restaurant boasts an impressive array of options that cater to plant-based diets. The reasonable pricing only added to the overall appeal.
A standout gesture was the complimentary vegetable clear soup they offered just purely upon our curiosity. This gesture, along with the quality of the food and service, showcased the restaurant's commitment to customer satisfaction. For those seeking outstanding vegan and vegetarian fare, the Vietnamese Vegan Restaurant is an absolute must-visit. Personally, I left with a sense of contentment and can't wait to return when I'm in the vicinity.
An all-vegan menu with authentic Vietnamese dishes (as far as my knowledge goes at least). I really enjoyed the wonton soup and my husband had the Com Chien fried rice which was also lovely. It’s in China Town but definitely worth a trip if you are staying in Waikīkī. I would gladly go back to try other things on their menu. The iced tea instead of water was a nice touch we really appreciated too.
Hidden gem in Chinatown. The trend of vegan restaurants offering “fake meats” is somewhat off putting to me. While this restaurant has its share of that, I am pleased to report there are some amazing offerings on the menu and based on that I’m sure their “fake meat” is fine. :)
Tried:
Bitter melon soup - this is not for everyone, “bitter” is a hard flavor to pull off but this is a wonderful, lightly salted but flavorful broth, accentuated by bean curd skin and the stuffed bitter melons.
“Baked” tofu - the exterior is golden brown and crispy. The interior piping hot and soft. Garnished with some salty herbs which are the perfect complement. They go well with rice as well!
Spring rolls - delicious, not overly greasy. The vermicelli is great too.
Bottom line: try it!! Especially if you are looking for a non meat option :D
Thuong An Lac is a small place tucked away in Chinatown. This all vegan restaurant is an opportunity to eat authentic Vietnamese food without worrying about the ingredients. The Noodle and Wonton soup is one of my favorite things I ate in Hawaii. My friend who showed us this place always gets the Broken Rice with Pork Chop and Meatloaf (a vegan flashback to childhood). We also came with a non-vegetarian who enjoyed her Curry with bread.
