Best KPortal Reviews
Not sure what happened during the visits of previous recent reviewers, but ours was very enjoyable. For reference, we went on a Friday lunchtime.
Menu was limited but that's often a good sign, especially for a restaurant which has recently undergone a rebranding.
We ordered the beef pie, the chicken salad and the ploughman's. Portion sizes were certainly appropriate for the price considering it is a tourist attraction and it all tasted lovely. The food even came in prison-style trays which was a nice nod to history!
Service was faultless; a highlight. Both our servers were welcoming, friendly and attentive. Speed of service was ideal as well.
The setting of the restaurant is a nice blend of the contemporary whilst still incorporating elements of its past.
I would highly recommend eating here if you are in the Bodmin area. Empty trays all round!
Found The Courtyard on Google for lunch as I was passing through on the way further south. A very yummy stop off - within the Bodmin Jail entrance but you don't have to have tickets to enter the restaurant. Food is delicious, I had the club sandwich and there was a mayo type sauce on it which made it amazing! Slightly higher price range I imagine if you are a large group or just looking for a quick bite but if you are a fan of good food and not fussed about the cost then definitely the place to stop in Bodmin. Had a lovely outside terrace with some shady and sunny bits with a more formal inside. Staff were very nice and had clearly been trained to give excellent customer service above and beyond the usual.
Great for a quick meal - it was empty on a weekday (between 1.30pm - 2.30pm) after our jail attraction tour. The halloumi fries were a generous portion, so were the chilli garlic prawns (a tad under seasoned and not spicey for our pallet- but pairs well with the salty halloumi). The pepperoni pizza was nice.. the main attatraction was was sticky toffee pudding (with clotted cream, Not ice cream). Just sublime... Great service too.
Lovely clean restaurant, great staff, delicious food, BUT too many dogs! They were throughout the restaurant. You go to the trouble of asking about allergies, so you say no, thinking you mean food allergies, no one asked about my allergy to dogs! They were sat every side of me, if that’s not bad enough, one of them starts barking! Come on why are they allowed into restaurants, I fully appreciate that support dogs need to be there but none of the 4 dogs in this restaurant on Saturday night needed to be there. If they need to be in a restaurant then out them in one area or ask other diners about how they feel about being sat next to a dog! It spoilt our night!
We had breakfast here daily due to having dogs with us we could not go to the other restaurant, staff were brilliant, food was fantastic, only down side is its used as an office (3 out of the 4 mornings we stayed) so we listened to two different job interviews going on at the same time - was interesting ???? and other business dealings as well as staff being told what to do. Amazingly on Saturday morning there was no sign of a laptop or office use. The staff each morning were bright and cheery and always made a fuss of our two boys, one morning they where treated to a sausage each. We also dined here some evenings, even had room service, it was fantastic each time. Had a few drinks in the outdoor area which was lovely too
Very nice meal with friendly staff. We had 3 small plates (padron peppers and sea salt, ham croquettes and goats cheese and spinach croquettes) I personally wasn’t a fan of the goats cheese and spinach ones but that’s personal taste.
My parents had the 2 course lunch menu. (Mushrooms on garlic bread and fish and chips).
They had 2 lattes and we had tap water.
The food and service was lovely.
Only stopped for drinks and calamari after visiting bodmin jail. Calamari was delicious. Cappuccino was good. Only let down was the chocolate milk was mainly ice (see pic).
Service was quite slow and could see there was confusion between what waiter/waitress was telling people. No rush to see to people, seemed to take foreverto get the attention of staff to have the bill. Clean and relaxed environment.
A confusing experience. This restaurant seems to be half way through changing to ‘The Jolly Hangman’ so we arrived to a set menu style setup, completely different from the restaurant we thought we’d booked a few weeks ago.
Starters were excellent, though portion sizes varied massively. The crab was delicious, eaten in two bites. Arancini balls were also lovely, though a much bigger dish with four balls. Main dishes come with no sides, so you must add them yourself at £5 a pop. I paid £5 for a tea cup of chips, which was lucky as my main dish was so disappointing, at least I had something to eat. Avoid the pumpkin dish, though I’m told the beef was very good.
Our first experience with a member of staff was so odd, we were all left cringing. He kept trying to make jokes that nobody understood, then would just wait in awkward silence. As the menu only listed ‘£50 for 3 courses’ I asked if we could have 2 courses instead and what the price would be. The response “You can have four courses for twice the price.” Our server kept repeating this every time I asked the question. Eventually he said he didn’t know the price for two courses, but it was probably £40ish. When I asked a question about a dish on the menu, he simply said “I don’t know”, without offering to find out - which I then asked if he could do. Drinks left on our bill which we ordered but we’re then out of stock. A different member of staff took over our table, who was much much better.
There seemed to be half an attempt at fine dining, with the portion sizes, presentation and pricing. But the service, tables and menus riddled with grammatical errors made it all a bit scrappy. It also seems so odd that all food is brought through the main entrance door from the kitchen upstairs, so that every time food arrives a gust of cold wind follows.
I wouldn’t go back.
