Best KPortal Reviews
For starters we split some pierogi (Polish dumplings), my Polish friend said we "ALWAYS have to do pierogis". These came quite quickly, with beautiful pleats and stuffed full of cheese and potatoes (Russian style). The cheese was creamy and a little tangy, the whole thing went down in minutes, and were topped with some delicious fried onions.
The menu said that all mains are served with salads, and I was expecting maybe some leaves and a dressing. What came instead were a creamy homemade coleslaw, heavy on the grated carrot, and a warm beetroot salad, sweet and sour. They both complemented our mains very well.
From the main menu we ordered a pork schnitzel. Whilst waiting for it, we heard the rhythmic thumps as she pounded the pork loin chop into submission. What came out was a giant thin slice of pork, bigger than my face, with a coating of breadcrumbs that didn't slide away from the meat when we cut it. I had actually ordered the "fantasy" pork schnitzel with mushrooms and cheese, but she may have misunderstood me or forgot, I didn't have the heart to tell her so I gave up on the topping. Our toddler must've enjoyed the freshly fried crinkle cut chips as it was all he ate.
The other main we ordered was on the specials board, some golabki (Polish stuffed cabbage) that she had recommended as "Very good!" I had expected a couple of small stuffed vine leaves-sized things, but what arrived were 2 giant pieces of cabbage stuffed with minced pork and chicken and breadcrumbs, alongside some creamy mashed potato all topped with a savoury tomato sauce. The filling was looser than I'd have liked, but the sauce was surprisingly good despite me not tasting much tomato.
The portion sizes were absolutely massive, this was the definition of warm and hearty meal, and by the end I was as stuffed as my golabki and bursting at the seams. My wife still wanted to try the Carpathian cream cake, but unfortunately they had run out that day, so didn't get the chance. I'll leave a photo of the main menu here as their website/Facebook page doesn't seem to have one.
All in all it was a satisfying meal, £37 for the 2.5 of us including a bottle of still water (couldn't communicate tap water successfully). I'm glad we have such traditional food in unexpected corners of Reading. I'm not sure if I'd come back again soon though, the language barrier is quite tricky, maybe when the Carpathian cream cake is available and if she makes some pork hocks again that I saw on her Facebook page, I'm a sucker for those.
Being a Polish restaurant, other choices include Piwnica south of The Oracle, and My Warsaw inside Kings Walk Mall. I'm a big fan of Piwnica and their hearty portion sizes, especially their pork hock. They're more well staffed as a restaurant, with wider menu choice, and better suited to serving people in English. My Warsaw is more of a lunch takeaway place, with delicious open baguettes, but I was amused by the zapiekanka being relegated to only the children's section at Pasibrzuszek! ????
Hope you enjoyed the review, and maybe give them a shot if you're up for an adventure! We parked at Chester Street car park for 2 hours (bring coins, RingGo is the double the price of the machines these days!), and she didn't have any high chairs for toddlers so we brought a booster seat. Thanks and happy dining! :)
Really interesting selection of unusual food ... As well as burgers if you want the basics! Restaurant was fairly empty at lunchtime so service was really quick, but food was fresh. Soup was nice. Definitely worth trying out. Was a bit of a language challenge but that was part of the fun!
Delicious food, very big portions, everything fresh. The best of Polish food, as it would be served in Poland :) the lady owner works here and is absolutely amazing and loving every bit of it. Recommend 100%
Very tasty food. Brings home back here. Size of portions is value for money. Highly recommended.
Nice food cooked at home , just like your mother would. family owned and they do day menu and when we were half of the stuff were sold. Priced fairly. Best to eat in i guess .
This restaurant is underrated. A little family business with VERY tasty food! The prices are resonable and the owners are very kind. Give this restaurant a try, you will not be dissapointed!
Best polish food in town! Great portions and wonderful staff ????
Great cooked breakfast today. Enjoyed the coffee (included) too. Second coffee was a little more expensive than I would have guessed, but I didn't mind as I was the only customer on this (very) rainy morning.
