Had the special, worth every penny.Gorgeous fish & chips with tartare sauce, lemon wedges, bread and butter and a tea or coffee! Fresh, very tasty and generous portions.Ate in the lovely cafe area.
Reviews normally start with a picture of the food, and as the saying goes; a picture paints a thousand words. So here's mine.
Forget about going into Whitby for overpriced fish and chips. Stop here on your way. The very best you'll taste. Always excellent.
Update: Called today ( 27/9/23 ).
Good traditional fish and chips done to a very high standard. Excellent in every respect. Very friendly and polite staff, too.
Superb.????.
Update: 27/3/24.
Just as good as ever. The fish is top quality. Best I've tasted.
Superb in every way.????.
Probably the best fish and chips in the area. I cannot think that I have ever had better battered fish. Clean good service and attentive staff. Has to be five star
Enjoyable meal with a family friend. We had both passed the fisheries many times over the years so after a Whitby trip and off to do a road check a mid afternoon meal beckoned. Lemon soke and chips was my personal choice ... very nice with garden peas. Friendly service and clean surroundings.
Parking cramped but manageable
I've passed by Eskdale fisheries many times on my way from York to Whitby but never called in until now. I've been missing out.
I ordered large Haddock, chips, mushy peas and a breadcake with a pot of Yorkshire tea for one. The tea arrived quickly along with a tray of condiments, shortly followed by the fish and chips which had been cooked to order, served by a friendly young waitress. The fish and chips looked quality, the peas were served in a large pot and were piping hot. The haddock which is cooked in beef dripping was beautiful, big fresh tender flakes encased in a light golden crunchy (but not hard) very tasty batter. It was mouth wateringly good, delicious. The chips were excellent, nicely brown and crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. The pot of peas was a very generous portion and they too were excellent.
Everything about the meal was perfect, the best fish and chips I've had for years. The café was spotless too.
Highly recommended.
We couldn't park in the main town so navigated to this fish and chip cafe.
There was very convenient on-site parking and the interior is light and airy with clean toilets.
It's a comprehensive menu with good fish selection and ok pricing.
I had a haddock with chips and mushy peas and unfortunately the fish batter was hard at the edges and inside the fish texture was dry and over-cooked. This fish should be moist and readily flake but it was just over-cooked and not enjoyable. My 3 other friends had similar issues.
The chips, by contrast, could have benefitted from 2 or 3 minutes more cooking. The potatoes were not a particularly good flavour.
Finally, the mushy peas were nice and mushy in texture - not just processed peas - but again, the flavour wasn't good. It didn't seem they had been cooked with enough salt and whilst this can be added, it's not quite the same as having been cooked from the start properly seasoned.
It may have just been a bad day for then, but really there were a few too many fairly basic things wrong with our meals - sorry.
Had takeaway cod & chips. Quite nice except chips were very bitty.
Toilet facilities not available to takeaway customers. After a journey of 20 miles this was disappointing.
Also had to wait outside for order to be delivered to me.
Medium fish? Hate to see a small fish! £17+ we paid for 2 medium fish, 1 chips and mushy peas... fish undercooked. Used these before and they've always been OK, this time very disappointed. Would have taken it all back, but we had driven few miles into the moors to eat it.
