I have seen two different Doctors at WHCN and have been nothing but impressed with both. Dr. Chambers delivered both of my girls via emergency C/S and I had the best experience each time. Dr. Ollar cared for me during my second pregnancy and has also performed 3 needed surgeries. Her staff always responds quickly no matter how silly I feel my questions might be. I couldn't recommend a better practice of providers.
I really liked my first appointment with Dr. Lashbrook. She realized I'm international and might not speak English fluently. She explained everything clearly and told me to ask questions if I didn't understand, which I appreciate. Dr. Lashbrook's kind manner is very important for patients. She asked detailed questions, listened carefully, and explained things patiently. She also quickly did all the tests I needed, like ultrasounds and blood tests, which I had been waiting for four months to get done. Her team is great too. They respond quickly to messages, care about the details, and are respectful to everyone, including those from other countries.
The wait to see Dr Carter was a little long, but I happened to be there during the eclipse on 4/8, so it was likely because of that.
Once I was called back, everything was quick and smooth without being rushed.
Went in for a well woman and to discuss BC options.
No one likes getting a PAP done, but Dr. Carter’s was hands down the best PAP I’ve ever had in my life. It was nearly painless and she was very comforting. 10/10 would get PAP’d by her again.
We also had a nice discussion, and I had a lot of questions that were answered thoroughly.
I see Hinojosa and Givens! I just went through my first pregnancy and they were nothing but helpful and kind to me the entire time. Both treated me as a person, not just a patient. Neither of them are pushy either which was something I worried about before my first appointments with not knowing anything about them. Although I didn't get to deliver with Hinojosa, when she did come see me in my room the morning of the day I delivered, she was warm and loving. Highly recommend these lovely ladies and their staff! Roxanne, one of their nurses also helped me over call on multiple occasions.
I had my first pap smear around a week ago here and just got an IUD put in today. Lilly Ferrell is fantastic! I felt heard and taken seriously in both of our appointments, and she was very thorough and explained every process in depth. If you have any anxieties about seeing a gynecologist like I did, go here. They take excellent care of you and they take you seriously
I would highly recommend Women’s Health Care of Norman! I have always received excellent care from Dr. Ollar Shoemake and her staff. Their facilities are always well kept and Clean. The staff members from the front desk to the nurses in back are very helpful, professional and courteous.
My wife and I used a doctor here throughout the entire pregnancy process. I can't speak to all of the doctors but our experience was just as bad as it could get. If you are looking for a conveyor belt or in-and-out method this place might be good for you. If you have any requests, have a birthing plan, or want to develop a relationship and establish trust with your OB, or would like to take a more natural approach (Ex. Bradley Method), I strongly encourage you to look elsewhere.
We mentioned to our OB that we were wanting to use a 'loose' birthing plan and had a couple of requests (natural if possible and C -section as a last resort, etc). Our OB was resistant multiple times to a birth plan and even yelled at us about our loose plan during delivery. She claimed that we had a signed birth plan and it tied her hands behind her back (she lied to us because the plan was NOT signed and we communicated it was not rigid but a loose plan if possible).
We stated that we wanted to shoot for a natural pregnancy and a C-section was a last case scenario. Our OB brought up multiple times getting a c section even though we let her know we weren't interested unless it posed a danger. Due to my wife's hard work, we were able to avoid a c-section. It just took a little more time.
We asked our OB if it was ok to use a doula since this was our first time. She said as long as they have actual medical/delivery experience that would be fine. We found a doula that had those things and she treated our doula poorly during the experience.
It felt like our OB wanted things done her way and didn't have any wiggle room for requests or a birth plan. We sensed a lot of arrogance and pride from her and she seemed offended that we would question her, have preferences, or asked questions about the process (this was our first baby so we had lots of questions). After the experience she wrote a rude letter saying that she wouldn't help us again and that we are some of the worst patients she had seen. She didn't apologize for yelling at us or treating us poorly but put the blame completely on us.
This OB caused heartache for my wife and really hurt our experience of bringing in our first child into the world. We are so thankful for the nurses, however. They overheard the OBs language toward us and we had nurses apologize profusely and said that how we were treated was not the standard of the hospital. They were so kind that they bought us gifts from the gift store and they even said that despite the OBs dislike for us and having a birth plan, that they would work their hardest to honor our request to go natural. They were set on helping us have a vaginal delivery.
The fact that multiple nurses approached us and apologized speaks volumes on how we were treated. Instead of us all being on the same team with our OB during the chaotic experience of giving birth, it felt like the nurses, me, my wife, and our doula were at odds with the OB. It was a very strange and unhelpful feeling. We are so thankful the nurses and our doula were there to help us.
Since the birth of our baby, we have talked with a WONDERFUL OB at OU Medical. We shared our experience and she was so kind and compassionate. She said she would love to work with us to create a birth plan that works for us and that she wants to meet with us often to establish trust and good care. It was a night and day difference and it felt more like a partnership/relationship and not a transaction.
Like I mentioned, I can't speak for all OBs but we experienced a conveyor belt type model. If you have any requests, want to go natural, or have a delivery plan, I would seriously recommend somewhere else. I spoke to a different OB at the Healthplex about the experience afterwards and she mentioned that the OB we saw is very old-school and has a reputation of struggling to adapt with new methods and natural approaches.
I hope our story helps someone else avoid the hardships that we experienced. Having a baby is difficult enough and you deserve to have someone in your corner fighting for you.
I contacted Women's Healthcare of Norman a month ago letting them know I was expecting and looking for an appointment. They sent me paperwork to fill out and said they would call me in a few days. After three weeks, they called to let me know they do not have space for me. In what world does it take a month to find out they do not have space? They could have just told me that in my initial phone call. Just very disappointed, and I feel like my time was wasted. I would recommend looking for a different provider who is better organized and who will not waste your time during a very vulnerable period of life. They also never answer the phone- it will always go straight to voicemail no matter which option you choose.
