I give VIET NOM ~4.33/5 stars. The service is great, the atmosphere is a notch above basic, and the pho is pretty good, though options are limited and the broth is quite specific.
First, the pho options. They only have 3: Bone-in short rib and meatballs, boneless short rib and meatless, and boneless short rib. So, no chicken pho for all the lovers of Vietnamese chicken soup.
Second, the broth. This is a very specific kind of broth that is beefy, star anise-heavy, and completed with fish sauce. If you’re into lighter broths, don’t like sweeter broths, or not a fan of fish sauce, you might be disappointed.
My experience of the boneless short rib pho? It was good, but I wasn’t super into the broth. Noodles, meat, fixings were all on point. They also have plenty of hoisin and sriracha for you at the table.
The atmosphere is pretty simple and basic, which is fine for a strip mall pho spot. They’ve got colored lanterns hanging from the ceiling and big colored fans on the wall, which is reminiscent of Hoi An in central Vietnam, where they have the lantern releases on the river.
My server was Kennedy, a friendly and easygoing young woman. She was nice to chat with and was quick to offer me ice water when I accidentally inhaled sriracha down my windpipe.
All in all, VIET NOM is pretty good, especially for lovers of short rib pho and fish sauce/sweeter broths. I still prefer other spots like Pho Sao Bien in Pacific Beach and Pho Minh in Talmadge.
The Pho Nom with bone-in rib was fantastic—rich, flavorful broth with tender, succulent meat that was simply unforgettable.
The ambiance was warm and inviting, and our server, Max, was attentive, enhancing our visit with his excellent service. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone seeking delicious Vietnamese cuisine and a great dining experience.
First time here but find it amazing surprisingly! The food is great and the guy named Max provides us great service too. (Love the pho and egg rolls :D)
I was greeted by Tommy right after I entered the restaurant. They have a simple menu so is easy for me to make decision. The pho nom ($19.5 as of 4/24) was very good! The meat is soft, the vegetables are fresh, the onions and green onions are nicely thin chopped, and the soup has just right saltiness. It also came with a good chunk of short rib???? Also the Thai tea is very nice! I will probably come here for the Thai tea along???? I think I will come back quite often.
New Pho place in town center plaza. I love to have a Pho place within walking distance. Max did great job providing service and the Pho is delicious with fresh and flavourful ingredients. Would definitely go back to try their reso of menu. The spring rolls were tasty and crunchy too.
Came here as a last minute lunch option and we were all craving pho. But what really sold us was the chili tamarind wings on the menu. Plenty of parking and easy to find. Got here right as they opened and us as a party of 9 were sat down right away. Hien, our server, was attentive and kind. The CHILI TAMARIND WINGS are to die for and the Pho Nom had a big short rib that melted off the bone. Love the atmosphere and definitely coming back!
Amazing little pho spot in the middle of La Jolla. My wife and I loved the short rib version. Definitely come visit and check them out. Say hi to Evelyn, our super nice host!
This place is pho-nomenal! I ordered the boneless short rib & meatball pho and the broth was rich and tasty. They make the thai tea from scratch and it was delicious. Hien was our waiter and was super helpful with all our questions. I will be adding this place into my regular rotation of go-to restaurants.
