Every time I need to use this station, they’re immensely thoughtful and extremely attentive. Everyone’s experience is different, but I just know for me I’ve never had any issues.
Union station, New Haven, CT. Easy pick up with lanes to wait for arrivals
Bus was clean, left on time, arrived as scheduled, no issues to speak of. I printed out my tickets wrong (double-sided) which messed things up during our transfer in Hartford.. but luckily the guy at the Greyhound counter inside was able to help us. His name was Chris, he was amazing, and he really saved the day by printing is new tickets. For 23 dollars, I def feel I got my money's worth.
Me and a friend had bought tickets to go from Hartford CT to Manhattan NY. We got the 7am tickets so we could arrive early and still have time to go sight seeing. We got there at about 645 am and went to the booth to find out there was a 3 hour delay. We were both upset but waited it out. 5 HOURS LATER our bus arrives and everyone is tired and clearly pissed off. I called the company to receive a refund because the worker at the both said that the 7am bus is never on time. (I still have not received the refund when i was told it would be in my account in 2 weeks) after the wait were finally on our way when one woman spoke up and asked why they had skipped her stop in New haven come to find out the bus driver had the wrong directions and we had to TURN AROUND!! It was already 3PM and we were still in CT. After we were back on the road to NY the bus driver had to make another stop for gas and it was already 5pm. We didn't arrive in NY until 6pm. We were devastated. Never riding the Greyhound bus line again
Do yourself a favor and seek out any alternative possible. I bought tickets online a couple of weeks before departure. For one, they didn't allow me to check my booking online, which was awful to begin with. Not only that, but the day of, the bus showed up online as delayed by 30 minutes to an hour. I showed up at the original departure time and the bus had already left (early!!). And then they wouldn't issue me a ticket on the next bus, much less a refund. Unbelievably bad service, I'll never be travelling with Greyhound again. As if that weren't enough, their customer service site redirects you to a page to search for stations to get in-person service at. The website doesn't even work! Disgusting.
Many developing/third world countries provide better bus services than Greyhound. I can say this with confidence because I’ve traveled extensively in other countries. The sheer callousness and IDGAF attitude one gets to see at Greyhound has few parallels. This bus line was a big surprise for me in the otherwise pleasant and professional American travel experience.
I traveled between a city in north east to new haven, round trip, using their peter pan service. Both ways, the buses arrived at the pick up point about 30 minutes after the scheduled departure time. Delays are sometimes inevitable on the road, of course, but there's no one around to tell if the bus is coming or not and if yes, does it have space for you. The desk clerks at both places had no clue why the bus was late, when it was going to come and whether there are enough empty seats on it (yes they overbook - on the return trip, there were 20+ passengers left stranded with no seats available.) Lesson - just because you bought a non-refundable Greyhound ticket doesn't mean you are traveling on time, or traveling at all.
At the new haven station, Greyhound has a tiny waiting room right by the exit where 5-6 people can sit- everyone else has to stand in the parking lot, rain or shine. You can risk sitting on the comfortable union station benches inside, but then you'd miss your bus in case it arrived - there's no announcement system. The lone screen displaying the arrival and departure of buses is inside the waiting room and it has no connection to reality. If your bus is delayed or MIA, the screen goes on showing its normal schedule. The desk clerk doubles up as a Western Union employee so he isn't terribly involved or concerned with your travel plans, he has other things to attend to.
The bus finally arriving 45 minutes late from new york to new haven had a harried and very annoyed lady driver whose angry response to passengers asking her what they should do now that the bus had no empty seats was, and I quote, "I don't know" followed by closing the bus door and leaving.
It's probably easy to get angry with the employees, but I suspect Greyhound stations are (deliberately?) understaffed and the employees are overworked. This is a business running purely on people's (mostly students' and those with low wages) need for low priced travel. In its bid to provide a no frills service, this company has done away with basic punctuality and courtesy. I reckon Greyhound would be a good case study of how not to run a company. The only missing component here so far is a CEO who pays himself a gigantic bonus on the back of large job cuts and horrible customer service. Not sure if this has already happened.
An interesting thing happened when almost all passengers asked for refunds. The clerk almost gladly handed out refund envelopes which we have to mail to dallas (yes, you can book tickets online but cannot get refunds online). Let’s see how that goes now. A follow up review will be posted here, or if things don’t go well perhaps a consumer court action.
It’s really much better to pay a premium and travel by train, flight, car or even a boat if need be than take this godforsaken bus service. Seriously.
The bus from New Haven to NYC was okay. Very old but on time. Coming back was hell. My bus was supposed to leave at 7pm but they ran out of drivers. At one point there were six buses parked with hundreds of people waiting but no drivers. No one would tell us when a driver would come or how long we would have to wait. Finally at 2:30a.m. after over 7hrs of waiting we got our driver. I went to board the bus and was told my ticket had been cancelled because they were no longer going to New Haven only to Hartford. I asked if I could board the bus for Hartford and they said no. In the end, I had to sneak onto the bus for Hartford. Got off in New Britain and paid $30 for an uber to New Haven that got me home at 5:00a.m. I've been sick all week from this horrible experience. As I have now learned and would recommend to anyone considering Greyhound. For just a little more money you can take the Connecticut North Rail into NYC. It is far more reliable, comfortable, and courteous. The choice is yours!
Not satisfied at all traveling with them. My trip from Worcester Ma was great. Driver was very polite and friendly(he’s the reason I’m considering a star). we set off and arrived in NYC on time. From there, I had to wait 6 good hours for a bus to Newark(a trip of only 35 minutes.) The station at NYC was very dirty and most of the staff there had no good work attitude. My return trip was worst! Buses don’t set off on time, causing late arrivals. It’s definitely my first and last time traveling with them.
