The oldest Italian restaurant in Chicago has a stunning decor that transports you to a little village in Italy. The ambiance is truly charming. We ordered the garlic bread, which was very good. However, the lasagne was disappointing as it lacked cheese and was quite bland. The Rigatoni di Franco was good and had a nice flavor. The Italian Rum Cake was decent, though it would have been better without the frosting. Overall, the experience was just OK. While the atmosphere was lovely, the food didn't quite meet our expectations.
Really nice atmosphere! There's open seating mostly but also little semi-private areas with small tables if that's what you're looking for. Service overall was pretty good. My friend loved the 1927 gin martini! Pasta dish was really great - one order is enough to share between two people. Comes with soup or salad but we opted for Caesar salad which was a small upcharge. The chocolate mousse dessert was amazing!! Could eat more than one!! I would definitely make a return visit!
Stumbled upon this place after watching a show at the CIBC theater. We were seated right away without a reservation (we went mid afternoon). There was a construction at the entrance, but the restaurant itself has a lovely ambiance, food, and service. I loved the semi private tables. As a fan of Italian cuisine, their food is awesome! It's amazing that this restaurant stood the test of time!
Charming atmosphere; the place is set up like...well, an Italian village, including a waterwheel. There is a variety of food ranging from salads to sandwiches to pasta. (You may end up needing to eat everything with utensils.) Generous portions and a seemingly endless stream of bread pieces and water. The place is within walking distance of the Palmer House if you happen to be staying there.
The Village is a restaurant with history. It really is an interesting experience to dine there.. you feel like you just went back in time. The atmosphere at the Village is gloomy yet warm. The service was excellent; constantly making sure that we were doing ok. I loved the fact that they would bring us clean silverware with every meal. We strongly suggest you try their burratta and tomato jam appetizer! It was fantastic! The lasagna was authentic. Same as the seafood crepe and their tiramisu. Kids' meals were decent :) Overall, it's a restaurant worth visiting!
We came here for dinner after we saw a show at the CBIC theater. The service was great, we were seated promptly even though we arrived about 45 minutes before our reservation. The place was very busy. A server quickly got us waters and fresh bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We ordered the antipasto salad, which was good but slightly underwhelming. I was hoping for something a bit more robust. I ordered the lasagna with the minestrone and my partner ordered the chicken piccata with a salad. Both we very good. I actually preferred his chicken dish over the lasagna and thought it was a bigger portion of food for the money. We ended our meal with a cannoli which was complimentary for his birthday. Overall the experience was great and the interior of the place is stunning and whimsical. I would definitely return for our next celebration!
I took my wife here a few weeks ago, but I think I took her here a decade ago, 2 decades ago, lol. This place is the bomb. The only problem I had was breaking the cannoli, it was like a rock, BUT when you bit into it, it was like a beautiful pastry. I don't understand, our forks and knives couldn't crack the crust. But it was delicious
Alfredo was a great, friendly waiter. Lasagna and meatballs with pasta were delicious and we had enough for another meal when we got home. Rum cake, cannoli and Americano and cappuccino - best ever! I love the old school atmosphere, little has changed since my first visit in 1975. Love it!
