Quick stop after a walk for refreshments. Friendly staff and atmosphere.
At the end of a longer than expected country walk around Barnard Castle, we were eager to find somewhere that did Sunday lunch. We stumbled across this pub and were immediately made to feel very welcome. There was no one else seated in the lounge but the owner waved us through and made sure we were comfortable before personally taking our order. The menu included standard pub classics but we were after Sunday lunch. Beef or pork were on offer and they did not disappoint. Plenty of meat (surely the cuts were chosen by the owner as he used to be a butcher) with buttery smooth mashed potato, crispy roasties and a huge Yorkshire pudding. Loads of gravy and an extra jug just in case! Vegetables came separate and were just as tasty. Polished the food off in minutes and nearly licked the plate clean! Exactly what we needed, well cooked, home made traditional Sunday dinner. ||Puddings were lovely also and definitely worth squeezing in. ||All in all a great dinner and very friendly hosts. Do not miss this gem!
This is the village boozer but not very inviting. Advertised footie on TV but didn't have it on.
The cask ale was awful but a good selection of other drinks.
Positives – Good location, affordable.||||Negatives – Facilities separate from room.||||Details||The Hotel is located in one of the main streets in Barnard Castle.||||We stayed for 2 nights in October 2017. The cost for the room with twin beds including breakfast £50 a night.||||Our top floor room had twin beds, are area for hanging cloths and a small to medium sized TV. The décor was typical of a pub/Inn – not modern or a great size but adequate for our stay. We had not realized that the toilet wash basin and bath were located outside of the room – they were allocated exclusively to us.||||Complimentary coffee/tea were provided. The TV had Freeview channels and the free Wi-Fi was good and free working well on all of our devices. The beds were comfortable enough and we slept OK. Light came into the room in a morning and during the evening it was peaceful enough.||||We were the only occupants and chose when we wanted breakfast. Orange juice, tea/coffee, toast/jam and a choice of 3 cereals were on offer. The hot fresh food offering includes eggs, black pudding, sausage, bacon, tomato and mushrooms – all high quality ingredients. Great.||||The staff were friendly enough, particularly the lady who did the breakfast.||||Overall we would recommend it for a short stay awarding it 7 out of 10.
Stayed on our W2W Coast to Coast cycling trip. Quickly sorted out a lovely twin room, good shower and separate toilet just down corridor. All very clean and decent full breakfast. Bed was comfortable and the room over looked Galgate which was busy but not noisy. Met Landlord and staff very helpful. Nice pint in bar downstairs.
Clean, comfy and warm rooms. Really kind staff. Thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay and very much hope to see you all next year. You're breakfasts are awesome as were the waitresses. You were recommended by a local and didn't disappoint. Paddy and Geraint.
The Commercial is a very ordinary pub that, from a decor perspective, is in need of a fair amount of tlc. To be honest, my first impression was that the pub is scruffy and my instincts were to have a quick pint and leave. Somehow however, the friendly service and good atmosphere resulted in us staying for another couple of pints.||||Just goes to show that first impressions can be wrong.||We really enjoyed our evening here.
Comfortable and friendly locals pub which seems to have a big emphasis on games. Lovely coal fire makes the bar very warm. Pleasant Mein Host keeps the beer well.
