Great sourdough bread, and huge selection of handmade cakes. A well run local business I've been going for 20 years. Service is very fast and efficient but you're unlikely to get your ego massaged.
As expected, requests for gluten free, vegan options will be met with appropriate cynicism
This is Spanbroelmolen, the site of 19 mines which were detonated under the Messines Ridge, held by the German army.
18 mines were detonated at 03h10 but the 19th detonated a quarter of a minute later. The Royal Irish Rifles had rushed forward to occupy the crater and were caught in the late detonation of the 19th mine and many were killed as a result.
These mines and consequent craters were a problem; they had the ability to shock and kill the enemy but were afterwards fought over and targeted by the artillery from the British and the Germans so that, whoever fought to occupy them, were under targeted bombardment from the enemy and "friendly" fire.
Lovely bakery with a broad selection of cakes, fresh sandwiches and hot food too. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and they are happy to make things or put things aside if you call in advance. Pricing very clear behind the till so surprised at the comment about being charged for salad. Thoroughly recommend!
We've just been to the food shop in South Downs Nursery, Hassocks and bought a pack of (it says) 4 Plaxtol Bakery Macaroon biscuits costing £4.25.
On looking at the underside (at home) after we had purchased them, to find that they are actually only half a biscuit so 2 not 4 as states on packet! Why are they cut in half?! Very sneaky trick to play Plaxtol Bakery!! We will not be buying these again for sure

My wife and I love the bread from this bakery, especially the sourdough. Cakes can be a bit hit and miss, but seem to be improving. Sadly however I would agree with a lot of the reviews about the customer service, especially the older staff. I have been coming to the bakery for a good many years every week, however I always come away from there feeling unrecognised, my loyalty unacknowledged and to a degree that I have disturbed their day and been an annoyance to them! Enjoy the bread, its the best bit!
Baguette was priced at 5 pounds when quite clearly all the other ones were marked as around 3.60 or so.
Was mostly bread and salad had to have 4 bites before I even got to the filling (or lack of).
Wouldn't go back.
Rude rude staff! 3 grumpy older ladys, never smile, never polite or friendly. Ordered 2 baguettes and was charged 45p extra for each tomato and lettuce! I brought 2 baguettes and basically paid for a packet of tomatos for them and a whole lettuce! I made a comment about the price as I personally think £5 a baguette is ridiculous and the grump with short blondish hair had to make a comment under her breath! I should have just walked out without the food! Never ever returning! I've been here multiple times and can honestly say customer service is shocking! I recommend everyone trying east peckham bakers or Hadlow bakers! All the lady's are friendly and greetings you with a smile. Stay clear of this Terrible bakers
Lovely food but customer service (lack of) is terrible. Every time you go in its the same, this time was worse. They refused to make a sandwich and claimed they were closing in 5 minutes even though everytime ive been before they are open until 4 and this was at mid day. Could be a brilliant bakery if the miserable staff were replaced.
