Now called Shipham Inn, not Pencot Inn. A pub where the locals look you up and down when you enter the pub and listen to your bar order (as they're sat either side of the bar and you're interrupting their lunchtime pint conversation). Barman was friendly. Drinks are well priced (£7 for two half pints and 2 packets of crisps). Weather was good so we sat outside on the green and watched the world of Shipham go by.
Had a fantastic 3 night stay here over christmas, Graham and Cheryl the hosts were very welcoming and a lovely couple, they could not do enough for you to make your stay comfortable, the pub is dog friendly, The xmas breakfast and xmas dinner was absolutely fantastic as were the meals during our stay. In the summer we were told they do lovely bbq's out the front of the pub. The room we had was lovely, ensuite and warm the whole stay, we had the 4 poster bed and was so comfortable, tea and coffee in room and the bath towels were soft and thick, would definitely stay there again, a bonus was we love Kronenbourg lager and they had it on tap, Kieran who works behind the bar a proper character and nice lad, everyone loved him whilst we stayed there. Entertainment on the 23rd. December was awesome, a big thankyou to you both Graham and Cheryl, hope to return again in the summer, Regards Mick n Sam
Our car broke down as we were driving through Shipham last Saturday and while we waited for the RAC we visited the Penscot Inn where we were warmly welcomed by the staff and locals. We took the opportunity to have some food while we waited and it was fantastic with a great service. Thank you very much to Graham for the over and above service when the RAC didn't turn up! ????
Great place for a relaxed short break, close to all the attractions of the Mendips and the environs - sadly Shipham isn't exactly a vibrant cosmopolitan experience, so if you are happy to stay in one place of an evening (WIFI is excellent) it's worth checking out. Definitely need a car as public transport is non-existent.
Clean and comfortable rooms (we love the showers!) and a bar downstairs - what's not to like?
Food is of a good standard - the breakfast is huge and served with a smile.
Great local beer and ciders at the bar, well kept and reasonably priced - always a bonus!
There is plenty of parking at the rear.
Overall a positive experience and the Penscott team can be proud of what they have achieved in a short time.
Called in to the Penscot for lunch with friends just for the sake of trying somewhere different. Not a modern Pub and some would say in need of refurbishment, But the Butcombe beer was lovely and the rose wine was good too.|Now the food is the highlight top quality fish for the fish and chips cooked to perfection and proper mushy peas. We also had cottage pie and american chicken burger again very nice, even skinny chips were served for one of our party on request. |Its a limited menu, but with the cost of things nowadays who can blame them what they do is very very good indeed We will certainly go again. good value good service and nice people. Nice old Pup.|
Great friendly pub.Staff very helpful.
Food good
reasonably priced
We went for lunch and there was a long wait for food, despite not being busy. However, it was cooked from scratch to order and tasted amazing. Customer service was a little iffy from a dour older woman behind the bar who didn't want us to take a menu outside to look at but everyone else was really friendly. The table next to us spuriously sent back a meal because it had a bug in it - well, we were sitting outside so it was a real possibility it was going to happen - and the staff took back the meal without complaining and provided a fresh one. When our meals then came out, we were advised to watch out for bugs landing!
The toilets were clean and well-stocked with little extras.
We would visit again.
Nice stop for a lunchtime visit, great selection of drinks, (Butcombe Winter Warmer), good service and the warming fire was a real bonus
