We stopped off for bite to eat. Wasn't greeted at door apart from a grunt... Took a seat at the table. The manager came over ask what we wanted; he looked like he needed a good wash and was greasy. All the staff obviously didn't like working there. All the kitchen staff didnt have hairnets on. To be quite honest i wished we hadnt bothered... The food was near enough thrown at us with no customer service what so ever... the place was filthy and don't even get me started on state of toilets.
It’s all started off very well when Heston got involved, but now its slipped in mediocrity. We stoped for an emergency breakfast, warm orange juice not fresh like it used to be, we had to ask for ice scruffy staff, dirty floors and greasy stained ceilings. The ingredients, are not as they used to be and it’s a bit of a disappointment. If you called in to a road side restaurant in the States, or Europe you would get much better... smiles, spontaneous coffee top ups and a clean establishment, and nicely launder staff uniforms. It’s a business run on balance sheets not customer satisfaction, in my opinion! Shoot the management not the staff, & drive on and save your money!
Waiter forgot us sitting at a main table, he did apologize though. Food took awhile to arrive. Complementary tea and 1 coke. Food was reasonable. Very mean with a small pot of baked beans. I had an Olympic breakfast with toast. My partner had a jacket potato. Also 1 coke and 1 pot of earl grey tea. Toilets were not very clean. Only 1 handryer was working. Total cost was £14.46.
I had the fish and chips. My wife had the braised ox cheek. Kids had sausages and chicken nuggets. All were very good. Chips were a bit fluffy, ox cheek portion a bit small, fish slightly overdone, but these were minor gripes. One of the best roadside places to eat I've found, and almost on a par with the wonderful Tebay services.
The staff were also excellent, friendly, helpful and attentive.
One star only because I'm not able to score it lower. Sticky tables and a smell of sewage as we entered. Toilets were disgusting and in need of a thorough cleaning. The staff were friendly but it's the manager you have to blame for poor hygiene. Avoid.
The heating wasn't working and the toilets had ice cold water here. They served tea/coffee in mugs that were probably older than me. Coffee mugs were worn out (broken edges and had layers of coffee stain). And as expected few of us had trouble with the stomach and had to take a stop at the next services. The sprint for finding the toilets... Ohh!!!
Of all the Little Chef outlets we've been to, Popham is consistently the best.
Unfortunately however, Little Chef are no more. Popham has now become a Starbucks, and as such has nothing whatsoever to recommend it. I have therefore reduced my rating from four stars to one, if it were possible to rate it lower I would do so.
'John' the manager was very rude and informed us that my pregnant wife could not use the toilets as they were for customers only!
This was before he asked if we wanted to eat or not!
Very unprofessional and from the initial meeting I would not want to eat there due to the rude staff
