I have been chasing a creaking noise with my suspension for months now and I finally found the issue. Story below. And for reference, my family had been going to the garage for around 6 years prior.
First, I found a broken spring on my driver’s side. I knew what it was and as I only just noticed the issue, I thought there would be no need to replace a shock absorber so I asked only for a spring and top mount change. The price was reasonable and completed quickly. Less than a week later the shock absorber on the same side catastrophically failed. I assumed that somehow the garage had managed to damage the shock and caused it to fail. The garage technician that I showed my car to seemed unwilling to help with my claim. Fine, I asked them to replace the shock anyways and the lady at the front desk did say that they will help with labour. The car was fixed quickly, and the sound was gone.
I was given the shock absorber back with my car when I went to pick it up and after inspecting, it looks as though the spring was broken for a lot longer than I first thought so the garage was not at fault. Nonetheless they said they had helped me out with the cost of labour. This sounds pretty generous right? The problem is that while they claimed to help with costs, they masked the ‘help’ by charging the labour in as the cost of the shock absorber. I was charged £120 for one cheap brand shock absorber. You can buy a pair of Bilstein’s online for £80 so this is not a fair price. I have no problem with being charged for the shock and labour considering I was at fault here but the garage did not try to communicate this to me and tried to pass the work off as good will. This is poor customer service. Secondly, the garage should have inspected the original shock absorber before putting it back into the car, but they didn’t even though the damage was extreme. I was also not once recommended to replace the shock at the same time, saving on labour costs. This is again poor customer service as well as poor quality control on their part.
My third issue falls with malicious practice when putting the replacement shock on. I went to rotate my wheels a couple weeks later and whoever worked on my car was clearly unhappy that they had to do the job again as they tightened my wheel bolts in dry and way beyond spec. To get the wheel bolts out I had to have a guy twice my weight jump on a 19” breaker bar and even then it took a good while to remove. You cannot do this by accident.
Then the noise came back. I decided to fix everything myself after this experience and after changing lots of parts I found to be worn, the sound was still there. Again, when working on my car, every bolt the garage would have touched to remove the shock absorber were torqued down way beyond spec. I eventually diagnosed that the garage put the WRONG spring on the car. See image for reference, the left spring is the correct spec, the right is the one the garage put on. Completely different and not something that should be missed.
In conclusion, there is poor quality control, poor customer service, and malicious practice going on here. They failed to inspect parts that regularly fail along with what I asked them to change and advise the best action. When I had an issue they claimed to help me out but instead charged me 2-3x the going rate for the parts to cover their losses, and also maliciously over-torqued bolts as well as installing incorrect parts on my vehicle.
I’ll also say that family friends have mentioned similar experiences with the same garage and refuse to go back. They are also definitely lenient with their MOT testing. I changed garage after this experience and took another vehicle for an MOT where they found that the sills were completely rusted out. The damage was so great that it could fit my hand inside the sill and could not possibly have happened between the last MOT. The garage had been ignoring it. For my benefit or because they’re lazy/incompetent, you decide.

I have an irritating sound coming from my car and the staff here was able to look at it the same day.
Although the culprit for the sound hasn't been found, I appreciate they made the effort to test drive and give my car the once over to try and figure it out.
I'll be returning to use their MOT services next year and would highly recommend
I really like this little garage. I took my car last year for its MOT and again this week. (even got a nice postcard reminder). Both visits were organised & friendly I also felt they were up front and honest. Very reasonably priced and car passed its MOT (both times).
