absolutely fantastic fish and chips. The fish is always chunky and the batter is always well made. It’s cooked to order so it’s always a guarantee. I travel from sunderland to Stanhope just for Freddie’s and im never let down. Always clean and nice inside although it’s not the most spacious the staff are welcoming with cutlery available. always a pleasure going to Freddie’s a lot of fish and chip places lack with consistency. Freddie’s isn’t one of them. Take a bow.
Visited on Good Friday, so as you'd expect it was very busy. The staff were great and processed the queue that was out the door as quickly as possible. My mate got the order in of two large fish and chips and then we went to find seats in the town which were few and far between on a Good Friday. Found some behind Durham Dales Centre and opened up the wrapped fish and chips. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement, the "large" fish was anything but large. We weren't prepared to walk back and complain, but felt very let down. The fish itself was lovely, as were the chips...but we still left feeling ripped off on a business taking advantage of a Bank Holiday.
Called here 3 years ago whilst working in the area in a quarry for the next year and the portion size were excellent. Back here in this area for next 2 years and called in 2 weeks ago and the portion size was like a childs size even though i asked for large fish and chips. Thought last night give them another try and same again i said to the lad serving is that a portion of chips? Errr yes i said by eck..i would not like to see a small one. There was only at best a good handful of chips and the fish was not what a lot of people call large..had bigger fish out of the freezer aisle in a supermarket. Granted they cooked the fish fresh and it was tasty but when you walked in the female staff members never acknowleged you..too busy talking about telephone scams. I nearly said im not paying for that but my taste buds got the better of me. I will never go here again ile drive an extra 5 mins up the road to Frosterley to that fish n chip shop as it got recommended to me by one of the locals when i was sat over the road eating my fish n chips..she said you enjoying them i said apart from portion size and she smiled and said we dont come here we go to Frosterley..ya get a lot more for your money. I accepetstuff has gone up etc but you need to up your sizes here. You could of had some good money from me once or twice a week for the next 2 years while im in the area. Honestly i would avoid so people like me feel as though their not getting ripped off.????????
Popped in during the week (was passing through), we always stop here in the summer. They welcome and local news was great. The food up to it's usual high standard
Quite literally the worst fish and chips I’ve ever seen. How on earth do they think they’re going to survive serving this up. It’s not rocket science. Alright it’s a captive audience but still no excuse to be this half hearted.
Always our favourite place for fish and chips. The fish is super fresh, and in a lovely crisp and tasty batter. Ridiculously huge portions of chips, and very tasty mushy peas complete a great treat. Staff were very helpful when I wanted to order only just before they closed… super efficient.
Excellent Fish and Chip shop.
We always get some when we are in the area.
The fish is fresh and the batter perfect.
The chips are traditional fried in dripping for a taste that takes me back to my childhood.
If you have been conned into thinking frozen chips fried in vegetable oil are the real deal you don't know what you are missing.
My original review has been removed. How distasteful. Just like the food ????
OK, it's not that bad, I've always enjoyed it to be fair. Should be open longer, but they seem to struggle for staff.
