I have to update this review from 4 to 5 stars as this really is a brilliant surgery. Dr Tomalin is a fantastic GP and made a huge difference to myself and my family during a really difficult time. I think the merger with HMMC has been positive and it's now easier to get appointments. Getting through on the phone is always fine too.
This is a really good surgery. I've been a patient here for approximately 9 years, and I've never found anyone working here to be anything but kind, patient and friendly. I've never ever had to wait an unreasonable amount of time for an appointment. And because it's a fairly small practice, it's easy to build familiarity with the staff.
Dr Tomalin is my registered G.P. I don't see her too often, but when I do, she remembers me from the last time and always asks about my well-being im general.
Reception staff are lovely too!
My Husband and I wouldn't want to move anywhere else!
Been at Cale Green Surgery for over 22 years. When it was Dr Chang & Dr Tinsley... Dr Tomalin is in my opinion a very good family Dr. She knows all my family & is very helpful, professional & caring. Nurses & care assistants also good. I sometimes have a problem with the reception staff, can be abrupt at times.
The only good aspects about the Cale Green Surgery are Dr Tomalin who is always very friendly, professional and helpful and also two very nice ladies who work in the reception.
Other than that I have had nothing but bad experience with them. Firstly I was referred to a physiotherapist there who ignored all my issues telling me there was nothing wrong with me and the fact that I am a 33 years old healthy woman whose most joints suddenly started to hurt did not seem weird to him. Thankfully I also have a private insurance so I was able to see a real professional who took quite a few tests on me and decided I would probably need a surgery.
Secondly after signing up as a patient here I was somehow given a second NHS number. I have been trying to resolve the issue for almost two months now but the only thing that came out of it was the surgery loosing all of my medical records from the last 3 years. I have been trying to contact the surgery manager about it but every time I try to talk to him I hear he will call me back in a minute (which he never has) or that he is off work on a given day (which seem to be most days of the week). So I am in a real pickle now.
Having suffered with an 'unexplained illness' which grew gradually worse over an 8-year period (beginning after a course of antibiotics) I finally became so unwell that I was bedridden for a year in constant pain, sickness and experiencing cognitive issues.
Over the course of the illness I attended Cale Green dozens of times and was made to feel like a health complainer. I wrote to them several times to outline my symptoms (offering possible routes of investigation) and expressed how the illness felt like a virus and would come and go.
I voiced my concerns about allergies on countless occasions but was told it was 'unlikely to be' (without them offering to carry out checks to determine this as fact).
During most appointments my physical symptoms were dismissed with a suggestion that they were likely caused by mental health problems - I've lost track of the times I've been offered antidepressants and made to feel that my illness was a figment of my imagination/ stress.
Fast forward to multiple private doctors later and hundreds of pounds spent on private tests and I discover that I have Non Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity. A few months after eliminating gluten and I have made a full recovery.
Before I found my answer - and only at the request of my private GP - Cale Green carried out a test for Coeliac Disease yet failed to tell me I needed to be eating gluten for a valid test result (I had stopped consuming gluten several weeks prior to this). When I later raised this with Dr. Tomalin she said that was, "a fair point."
I simply cannot understand how this very basic food intolerance was overlooked for 8-years resulting in considerable pain, sickness, mental anguish, poor quality of life, lost earnings etc. I can't describe how traumatic it has been to put your health in the hands of professionals and not feel validated, heard or believed.
I find it appauling that without full exclusionary investigations Dr. Tomalin saw fit to misdiagnose me with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (during a 7-minute phone appointment). I was devastated to hear I had ME/CFS but was told, "it's best you know what you're dealing with so you can tackle it head on!" Does Dr. Tomalin even realise ME/CFS has no cure?
During my last (and final) phone appointment with Dr. Tomalin, there was no apology nor was I wished well now that I'm fully recovered. I've had to demand follow up food allergy, nutritional deficiency and Candida testing - nothing was offered despite the fact that two private doctors were concerned I could have Coeliac Disease.
Incredulously she still sounded suspicious at the mention of gluten being the culprit!!
This is a blatant case of medical negligence and I have found the whole debacle incredibly traumatic.
I can't help but feel that due to a period of having PTSD my physical symptoms were overlooked. Even in that case, PTSD was missed and I had to request EMDR (I was initially told they don't offer EMDR - a complete nonsense as this is the NICE recommend gold STAR trauma treatment).
I've been sent another patient's records when I've requested my own, and raised a formal complaint when I was told to rebook another appointment with a cancer-scare because they can't look at multiple issues in a single consultation.
Sadly they're now also trying to pass my partner's 'unexplained symptoms' off as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, even though he's reporting breathlessness and coughing up blood. They haven't even called him in to do a physical examination.
Absolutely appauling medical care, rude and incompetent reception staff, and no privacy whatsoever when speaking to the staff via the waiting room hatch. The only good thing in this practice are the nurses who seem to have a genuine interest and care for their patients.
Avoid at all costs.
Waited 50 minutes. Didn't get the promised injections. Had my appointment closed before seeing a doctor. Was told I was too young for covid vacation. Apparently not as it was done today in Whalley Range. HMMG who made the appointment accepted no responsibility.
I can't get an appointment even after 3 attempts.
Well. I’m thinking of moving to a third world country to get a better GP service. This is not specific to this particular GP but several I have had experience with. So one can’t blame the individual practices but those who are responsible for their overall funding.
