Lovely woodlands with a meandering river. Good for long walks.
An excellent example of the Sunart oakwoods, part of the once extensive Atlantic fringe woodland of oak and hazel and dripping with lichens, mosses and ferns. Arriving at Strontian from Corran Ferry, cross the bridge to the west of the shops and turn immediately right. Drive up through the scattered crofts and cottages along the Strontian River side. See Ariundle Centre on right and continue a few 100m further to a car park (Forestry Commission signs). A good trail takes you on to the Ariundle Oakwood National Nature Reserve.
The trail continues through the reerve and on to the hills. There are loop trails to either side. The one to the left (west) climbs up the hill, is narrow and irregular ("strenuous"). Pass a hut circle (may be hard to spot) and a ruined croft. You'll see many tree trunks with abundant mosses and large leafy lungwort lichens. Why are there more young holly bushes under the pine trees?
The other loop to the right (east) is boardwalk in parts and grass in others. When we were there there had obviously been some flood damage to the surface. Get lovely views of the River and back over the woodland and surrounding hills. If you take this loop in a down-river direction you could take the alternative Faeries path back to the village and through the community woodland.
Beautiful place to visit with a good length walk through some beautiful oak woodland and a pretty river.
Good walking with stunning views of the wilderness. You can overnight in the car park (Stay for Night, Forest amd land Scotland). Bring your water and chemical toilet and please take away your rubbish. Most of the proprietors on the road to the car park sell free range eggs, with one producing great chutney, jams, pickle etc.
Lovely big car park with bays and some benches. Bonus that the forest is an ancient remnant of the forests that used to cover Europe. River looks lush for a fun float down it!
Moss thicker than I've ever seen making the forest look like a scene out of Lord of the rings. Peaceful too
Great wee place for hot soup coffee and cakes open plan with a small boutique shop selling products from the world for poorer countries.
Had a great walk through the ancient woodland on a wet day
