Okay. I admit I should have done more research on this area prior to getting here and losing all internet capabilities. That being said, the parking lot for this was literally up the road from our rental so we thought we’d check it out on the way out of town.
I stupidly was wearing sandals, we took no water because we thought it was a quick hike.
There is no signage to let you know where to go. After going through the entrance gate, we walked for a while then the road came to a three path option.
We decided to take the right path because we thought the Airplane Rock might be on the top of the hill. Uh, no. This appeared to be private property (a horse farm). One good note, we could get a signal and were able to read some reviews so at least we knew which of the three paths to choose. Answer: left path.
What we didn’t know was HOW MUCH FURTHER we would have to hike until we FINALLY arrived at the rock formation.
The paths did start having an orange paint mark but without telling you previously that this color marked the path.
There were also signs about 15 minutes into the hike that say you need a permit to be there. Should’ve put this at the START of the trail.
My step count showed over 7,000 steps by the time we got to the rock and this was our first outing of the day…and I still had to walk all the way back.
My fault: Bad shoes on sharp driveway-like rocks the whole time bruised my feet.
I also have RA and a bum knee so many would be able to hike the hills much easier than I did.
One positive: Almost the entire walk was in the shade (this is a plus for a redhead).
Be prepared. You are in for a good solid hour of hiking on rough rocks up and down hills. The trail puts you out on the top of the rock formation so you have a great view but cannot see the “airplane” look of it.
Beautiful Hike, along with 21 Horse Cave which you can get to on the same trail.
The view at sunset was spectacular. The expanse that is visible as you reach the precipice is stunning.

Hockman Rd. parking lot to Airplane Rock is a 1.85 mile hike along a service road. It was mostly gravel, but the last stretch got rather muddy because of the horses. Not so bad that it was unpassable. When you get to the outhouse and the horse parking lot look for the map/sign near the fence. Airplane Rock is down a short path beyond the fence. (That part isn't necessarily clear so it's easy to think you missed it.)
Loved the walk but this may not be the best place to start walking. You start at the top of the canyon here and have to walk a way before you can get to a spot you can get into the canyon. Best to start from the highway where your already at the bottom of the canyon.
We found a parking lot for Airplane rock but never found the rock, no signs pointing it out. We did follow a horse trail and found 21 Horse Cave which was nice. Very hard walk to get to the bottom of the cliff.
Great spot that really isn’t hard to find. Simply follow the road, the tire ruts will lead you there. There are occasional orange trail markers on the trees. Once you reach the outhouse on the left, there’s a Hocking Hills sign showing this spot is “L”. Walk past the old fence (you’ll see the path on the left of the fence, to the right of the sign) and follow the trail. For an alternate view, take the trail to the right when you’re almost to the rock (you’ll see a big fallen tree, go over or around that) and you’ll come out on a different outcrop and you’ll be able to see the sheer cliff face of Airplane Rock to your left.
30-45 minute hike but worth it! Once you arrive at the grass parking lot. Walk past the orange gate heading down hill. You will come to a fork in the road, stay on the bigger path to the right. I think there are white trail blazes. You will reach a point where there seems to be three different ways to go. If you go right up the steep muddy hill it will take you too a horse ranch. But instead go left up the gravel road that has a gradual incline. Keep on it until you reach the outhouse. And just past the out house you'll see some wooden fences that are falling apart. Go through the fence and you'll arrive at airplane rock!
No signage, and the only nearby trail doesn’t seem to lead to Airplane rock at all, or at least not from what I could see. We did find the 21 Horse cave trail (which isn’t marked either) and stems from the larger main trail which is located near a sharp bend on the main trail/access road(hint hint)and hiked that until we reached the cave area and then hiked down to entrance, but still no Airplane rock. Totally worth the hike regardless of not being able to find our original target. I can say we did canvassed the area pretty well so be prepared if you come here looking, you may leave empty handed and if you do find it then please post glues to the location for others to try and find.
