Newly opened metro station serving Washington Dulles International Airport. The station is part Metro's Silver Line. A trip to/from Downtown DC costs $2 (vs $50-100 for a cab) and 60 minutes. The walk to the terminal takes 10 minutes. The platform is outside and mostly covered. The ground level of the station is one of the few on Metro to feature bathrooms, giving travelers and riders a chance to refresh before continuing on the journey.
January 2023 5*
There are very few airports in the US which are connected with Metro. WMATA did an excellent job by connecting both key airports in Washington DC. The line which connect to Dulles Airport is called Silver line and Blue line connect to Ronald Reagan airport.
The train station is clean and very nice. Staff is very helpful and guide me on how to buy ticket. You can buy physical card at station or can add virtual card in your wallets.
My only wish is that metro station should be more closer to airport as you need to take a long walk but it is well connected with sideways. So big congratulations to WMATA team. It just costed me $2 to travel from airport to DC Downtown. Taxi will cost you between $80-100. Take train.
Dulles now having a metro station is a huge plus for travellers, instead of a $50 plus taxi fare it's $6 into town.
However here are a few things to note:
1 - It's a 10 min walk away, worth noting and factoring into arrival / departures
2 - The metro takes 75 mins into central DC
3 - It's not made clear when you arrive, with the result that there's a staff member on hand having to help arriving tourists, but you are best buying a Smartrip card for your whole visit. Especially if you are staying for a few days, load it with $20 (there's a $2 deposit)
You can also transfer your card to Apple / Google pay if you register it on the SmarTrip app, in theory you need to put down a US address but I just made one up (or put down your hotel)
Beautifully designed, with great transit systems! JFK’s vision, America’s glory! Wish we still have those.
Probably one of the most awaited to be opened Metro stations in the system. Recently, I used the station and took the metrorail into the city. Incredibly cheap ($2) and that beats the $60+ that Uber, Lyft and a taxi would charge. Easy and convenient. Thank God for this station.
Signs to Metro from airport not well marked. The signs lead you to the bus area and then there are no signs from Metro. If you put it in maps it directs you to walk all the way around and figure out a way to get in. Signs clearly directing you to the tunnel would be great. Good luck in finding it, or look forward to a nice long walk in lovely DC humidity. I would give it a much lower rating if I could.
Clean and new. Easy to get to from the airport main building.
I am really happy that the Silver Line finally connects DC to IAD. The station is easy to get to from any terminal at IAD.
