During our most recent trip to DC, finding a decent restaurant was sometimes challenging because the reviews can have thousands of reviews but the food is flavorless and mediocre but service is great. On our first night we went to Unconventional Diner and the reviewers got this one right.
The decor really fits the atmosphere and the ambiance of the restaurant. Upfront, let me say that the noise level is loud so be prepared to talk loudly and listen even harder. Moving on, our waiter was great, provided great customer service and was attentive the entire evening. He was able to answer all of our questions in a thoughtful and concise manner. He made his recommendations based on other patron's feedback and his own person experience.
I decided to go with the Double Cheeseburger medium well as did my daughter. The service was quick and we promptly got our food. I don't say this lightly, for the price, my burger was one of the best burgers I have ever had and the portion size was decent. The flavor was there, the crispy outside and proper temperature made this exceptional. I was impressed from the first bite to the last so much that we went back again!!
Overall, definitely the best restaurant we went to during our trip and I would definitely recommend this to be one of your first stops when in this area!
the staff were very welcoming! The restaurant was clean and spacious. Also, the cocktails we tried were very good! Also Manager Filip took great care of us! and made sure we had a nice experience! The food was really well above the standards and was amazing.
We came for brunch on a Friday, and there was no wait for a table. However, reservations are likely a good idea. The menu has unique options with clearly labeled gluten-free and vegetarian options. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The presentation of the food was gorgeous, and it tasted even better! The atmosphere is bright and welcoming with some light music playing. There is also an outdoor patio seating area. Overall, it was an amazing dining experience, and I highly recommend a visit here.
Went here for a late breakfast / brunch during the week. Food was better than expected. Pancakes were fluffy but still had a nice crust to them. The shrimp and grits had a spin of Caribbean flair and I was a big fan. Would recommend and will go there again.

Perhaps I ordered the wrong dish. The chicken and waffle flavours didn’t mesh well. The waffle was dense and sweet with the cornbread texture. The syrup sauce was very sweet with only a hint of spicy. The butter on the side was really too much. Chicken was good but overall, the dish felt so so sweet and rich. Would have been nice to have it more balanced with some acidity perhaps. The gravy didn’t make the best pairing. Felt like a mushroom sauce from a packet that was mixed together with some water.
Service was really great though I wouldn’t recommend this dish or reorder in the future.
???? Our server is very welcoming and energetic when introducing the menu to us. He recommended the loaded breakfast biscuits which I liked a lot. Hash browns, sausages and fried eggs, although common brunch ingredients, were layered nicely to create a unique, rich, heavy taste and a variety of texture. The sauce had strong black pepper blended with some sweetness which I liked a lot! Kinda want their secret in that. Not too greasy but did turn out a bit salty toward the end.

???? Had carrot cake as dessert - not too sweet is the highest compliment I could ever give to a dessert haha. Its texture is smoother and denser than the carrot cake I had before from a farmers markets
- One thing to note is that the place is pretty busy. We went in at a Sunday noon and had made appointment a few days ahead. If you are looking for a quiet place and slowly enjoy your time, it might not be a great idea
wow! the michelin star is well deserved. incredible food, great service and overall wonderful atmosphere. and relatively cheap for d.c. i recommend (with enthusiasm) the cornbread, caesar salad, and the sweet potato dish.
A long time fan of their dinners, we finally made it for brunch. It did not disappoint. Make a reservation to secure a table. Their pancakes have a deliciously rich and sweet blueberry syrup balanced with a whip cream topping. If you’re not a fan of all the toppings order it on the side. And the open face biscuits are stacked with hash browns, bacon, and a Cajun gravy making a hearty and filling breakfast. The fries and its sauce is a must, even in the AM!
