9 of us arrived at the pub for a catch up and quick bite to eat just before 8pm on a Friday. There were maybe 10 people in the bar and no one in the restaurant so not exactly overrun or over busy and certainly not late in the evening. As we were ordering drinks at the bar from the bar lady, we were also discussing food options. The owner’s wife came out and stated - do none of you have a phone?? ||Not exactly encouraging or friendly welcome.||Given their lack of customers you’d think they would be pleased to have the business - we’ll not return.
I feel definitively at home when I'm in this pub ... The owners are so nice, lovely, and taking great care of you. It is a quiet place, I always feel like I'm eating with family at home. The food is excellent, this pub is in one of my 2 favourites in the surroundings.
We had dinner here on Saturday night, and were very pleased to find the food was of the high standard which we have always had. The menu had several additions to it, as well as the specials, and there was a very good choice. OH went for the steak and stilton pie which was served with chips and fresh vegetables. As always, it was excellent. I had the chicken and mushroom risotto cooked in white wine and cream, and it was scrummy. The accompanying side salad was fresh and crunchy. OH had the hazelnut roulade with fresh berries for pudding, but I was too full. The service was good, the food delicious and OH said the beer was very good. We'll be back again!
If you are looking for a traditional, rural country English pub with great beers and great food, this is the place. The landlord and landlady work hard to ensure all guests have the best possible experience and can't do enough to make sure you have a great stay. Great to see such a selection of good beer, and the chicken curry is to die for. Would never stay anywhere else in the area. What a find!
I eat here regularly as my in-laws like it, and in fairness they cope well with catering for groups as there is a huge amount of space. The food is also of a good quality, with a wide range of choice.||||That said- I was disappointed with my last visit. Part of my meal was forgotten and discovered by the waitress once dessert was served- the bill was not discounted. We seemed to be the only people eating too so you can't even excuse this with them being busy. My husband had a lemonade which was incredibly flat so I would imagine was served from an old open bottle. There is absolutely no baby change facilities or high-chairs- so really not very baby friendly. They charge £2.50 for a coffee which comes from a large cafetiere, which seems expensive.||||While we have been repeat customers for years, this experience leaves me feeling we can find somewhere better for the money, and certainly somewhere more accommodating for families.
A rare find - an 'individual' pub that is not part of a chain but run exactly how the owner wants. Howard is an exceptional licensee - one who brews his own beer on the premises. If you are fortunate, you will be there when one of his 'Secret Brewery' beers are available. If not there are always two other brews excellently kept. Good food, good beers and good atmosphere. What more could anyone want?
We stayed here for a family get together and it was very enjoyable. We arrived early when the bar was shut but the owner opened up for us. The rooms were lovely, very comfortable and clean. The evening meal was excellent, everyone enjoyed them and breakfast was the same. Would recommend it, a pleasant stay in the country!
Best pub in the area for for a nice pint of ale. a nice log fire in the colder months could do with more staff as they seemed rushing about even on a quiet evening. food prices are far to high and So i wouldnt eat from there
