Arranged to stay here for one night along with a group of friends in September 2015. We had lunch and drinks before setting off for the Monsall Trail and arrived back around 11pm. Received a very friendly welcome on arrival with a lovely homemade lunch. On our return from the walk, the landlord was a grand host, regaling us with tales of the area and his own life experiences. Camping area was very quiet and well equipped with showers and facilities. Two friends stayed in the rooms of the pub and loved those too. Lovely views of the area and an all round good stay had by all.
Arrived here at 7.00pm on a Saturday Night May 2014 after searching everywhere locally without success. One pub in Bakewell wanted £89 for a pokey room with a separate bathroom along the corridor. The Waterloo offered a lovely sized room with bathroom which, although a bit dated was very clean and tidy with wonderful countryside views. The cost for this double room with delicious full English Breakfast was £69 and this is high season. The owner and his lovely wife were very kind and helpful and we enjoyed a great atmosphere chatting with the locals and their dogs,||The bar/dining room featured a log fire and comfy seating area for the TV. Official finishing time for meals is 9.00pm but they were happy to give us a lovely meal at 9.40.||There is a great selection of draft beers and wines all at reasonable prices.
This place definitely isn't for everyone, my parents would hate it, I loved it. It's a really relaxed drinking pub, run by a couple of rockers (and you can tell from the decor). Lovely log fires, really chatty, friendly staff. Perfect for a couple of weary drivers to relax on the sofas and shoot some pool. I'll come back for a gig one day, I'm sure.
Stayed at a campsite down the road a couple of times and the Waterrloo was the nearest pub for a visit. It was pee-ing down when we arrived and pretty chilly too, so a lovely welcoming open fire gave a great first impression. There was a good selection of hand pumped beers and a pretty expansive food menu - I'm often sceptical about pubs having large menus and what the quality of the food will be like. We shared a starter of wings and ordered a main course each - both the quality and quantity was outstanding. I can't fault the service either - I got the impression the guy serving was multi tasking in the kitchen as he seemed to be rushing around, but he even took the time to ask how the food was. We will definitely visit again and can highly recommend a visit. It's also dog friendly!
Went for an evening meal with four adults, three kids and a dog. One of our party is gluten intolerant and even though they don't have a gluten free menu the lady was so helpful and listed all the things that were gluten free. ||The food was lovely and the pub was so friendly. We ended up staying for around three hours and the kids enjoyed playing pool. ||Beer great too. We would definatly visit again.
My friend and I visited the Waterloo while we were staying at the Beech Croft campsite nearby. The reception we received from the bar staff and the locals was exceptional. Cheery banter, free pool, and good quality wine all made for a really entertaining evening. Everyone in the pub was happy, and the atmosphere was really nice. The manager went out of his way to help a stranded man from Latvia who had lost his shoes, had no money and was soaking wet. The Beechcroft had recommended other pubs in the area above the Waterloo, and having been to them all, I conclude that this is based on a mutual agreement rather than anything else. Highly recommend this pub.
During our planning for walking the Limestone Way I phoned the Waterloo Inn to check their lunchtime opening times, only to be told they did not open at lunchtime. When I said we were hoping to take lunch there during our days walk the landlord said his wife might be able to cater for five of us. And so it was. The place was opened for us, we were given a warm welcome, provided with our choice of fresh sandwiches (with side salad) and crispy hot chips. A big thank you to the landlord and his wife especially as they were having their kitchen refitted at the time. Best wishes to the couple for the rest of their renovation plans for the pub.
Having booked a group of us to stay in September 2013, some camping, some in rooms as we have done for the last 3 years without problems, the new owners made us feel less than welcome. My £15 steak was not medium as requested but inedible and seemed as if it had been microwaved. One of our party ordered lasagne and it arrived at the table completely charred and black, she was told "that's how it comes" and when she asked for another it didn't appear. She got a refund for the food, grudgingly after asking an hour later. We were asked to move into a back room away from the (quite empty) bar area and because we refused were treated very coldly for the rest of the evening. We left earlier than planned, as did the rest of the group, having to change venue the following morning instead of having a relaxed time. Some of our party had travelled from Holland and Scotland and the reception we received was shameful. We will not be spending any further hard earned money at this establishment. I haven't rambled on about the state of the rooms, toilets or showers as I had no first hand experience of them this time around, suffice to say other guests were unhappy and there could do to be a few improvements. I would warn anyone planning a stay here, especially as a group to think of another venue. This one has lost its charm.
