There’s no excuse you could make to sell these dolls. This is profiting off racism and encouraging the use of the figures. The Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia described the ‘golliwog’ as "the least known of the major anti-black caricatures in the United States". Alternative names such as golly and golly doll have also been adopted due to association with the racial slur ‘wog’, which many dictionaries say may be derived from golliwog The only place these figures belong is in the museum as a display of the racist and ignorant past of western history.
Avoid this shop and others in the village until they get rid of their displays of racially inappropriate dolls. We, a family group of 8, walked out in disgust. My daughter, visiting from America was horrified to see such a display. I suspect the store might be losing a lot of customers by persisting with this attitude.
Normal tourist tat, but the display of culturally inappropriate dolls is by far the worst shelf in the shop. It shows the managers to be totally out of touch with current sensibilities. It also drags down the whole village, other retailers should be asking them to remove such offensive items.
Visiting the area and was about to buy some gifts from this shop...and then I saw it. Lovely people in this village being tarnished by a small amount of idiots. (even if the sign says not to be offended ???? seems like they are doing it to get a reaction). Weird seeing other reviews still defending this in 2023.
Visited the coffee shop, met with fantastic staff and very good food. Would recommend if your in the area. The staff went the extra mile especially with my 2 year old! Thanks so much! We will be sure to return next time we are in the area! Lovely food lovely coffee and lovely staff!
Unfortunately not letting the 'byegone years' be bye gone means that many are and should be offended. Myself included! Ignorance is one thing, given the 'friendly' notices asking people not to be offended, and more concerning, to not take photos we can sadly not give them this courtesy.
The blatant racism on display here is extremely concerning in this day and age especially given the events of recent years this is completely unacceptable. Having grown up in North Yorkshire, I come home and proudly show off my home to my family and friends! Sadly, not only will I be avoiding this shop, but I will be avoiding the rest of the village and advising all my family and friends to do the same!
The shop had a ridiculous number of Gollywogs in there. the display wasn't close to entrance and had a "no photography" sign (which was nowhere else in the shop) beside it, so the owners clearly know that the display is offensive
Visited this shop a couple of days ago while on holiday , thank you so much for still selling jolly gollies ???? as ive been looking everywhere for these , it was lovely to see them still be sold !! Please keep selling i will be back in a few months time for some more to add to my collection ???? ????, lovely staff aswell.
