Visit to Crickhowell for family wedding. This hotel is the worst advert for Welsh tourism you can imagine.||||I hate complaining. I am a typical reticent English person who never complains about anything but this really took the biscuit! I was absolutely astounded that somewhere providing accommodation could be like this in the 21st-century. It was incredibly poor and needs a considerable amount spending on it which has not been spent probably in the last 25 years. The pub area was dirty, uninviting and full of old false-work ( stupid looking false beams and stonework like something out of the dungeons at Madame Tussaud's ). The route to the bedrooms was even less inviting and had no charm whatsoever. The whole place had very old carpets, was not clean, and with a staircase that was verging on dangerous. A boiling tea urn at the end of the corridor provides hot water for the tea and coffee provided in the bedrooms - astonishing! At first the bedroom looked vaguely acceptable. We did not have a lot of time so simply dumped our bags and went to the wedding. The following morning showed that the room was dirty the only thing that was clean was the linen otherwise we would've refused to stay. The bathroom had tiles falling off the wall over the shower. The shower itself was either really hot and dangerous or freezing cold and spilt water everywhere. There was what I suspect is a sewage pumping unit which operates when a toilet is flushed or sink is drained and this woke us up in the middle of the night. Moreover when it operates the lights dim significantly . I dread to think what the electrics are like!||When we left in the morning the pub or shut up and there was no one around to complain to. I can only say that having spent a night in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia - a third world country- the hotel there was appalling and the Old Red Lion was probably worse. when we left in the morning the pub is shut up and there was no one around to complain to.
Fast forward 30 odd years & the place is a dump. Where to start…..so on a freezing day in Feb, we arrive to find the room has no heating. All the control buttons have been pulled off the heater & only cold air blasts out. As the room is cold enough we give up. Reception bring a cranky electric heater to take the chill off the room. As we plug it in, it is clear the 3 way plug adapter has been overloaded in the past & there are burn marks on it. Maybe a small fire in the corner would not only do the place a favour but bring some heat. There is a noise, like a loud whirring & every time this goes off the lights flicker – they didn’t advertise it as haunted so we assume the electrics are dodgy. The bathroom has a “feature” Jacuzzi bath, left over from its 80’s heyday. This relic is also broken, the knob thief has struck in here too & all controls have been broken off. So having driven a few hundred miles to get here, a decision is made to cut our losses & drive a few hundred miles back to warm accommodation, where the electrics are safe – also known as home. We didn’t stay the night. Yes it is cheap, but definitely no cheer in here. We only booked this as everywhere else was full – Big mistake……huge!!!
We stayed for two nights and it cost £100. The room wasn't disgusting but very strange, dated and gave us a few laughs.||||We arrived, I went for a pee in our en suite and had to get my wife to let me out as the door handle came off in my hand, god forbid I was there on my own, I may still be stuck in the bathroom from the 70's.||||Could only get 11 channels on their new freeview TV that didn't include any BBC channels so it made watching the 6 Nations really difficult.||||No kettle in the room so I had to walk the corridor to the urn and make tea there, after blowing dust out of one mug and a dead spider corpse from the other.||||On our final morning I went to make our morning cuppa and the urn had been turned off, 25 minutes later the water was hot enough to make tea.||||The booking.com site states 12:00 check out, but a member of staff accosted me and said she likes people to be out by 10:30 despite what the website says.||||She then just opened the door next to the urn without knocking and walked in, I then heard her apologise to the guest she'd just walked in on.||||It was rough and ready, I'm a huge fan of the 70's and would have loved this step back in time normally, but not at 2017 prices.||||Will we return............... no.||||Good luck to all future visitors
Arrived to stay in so called apartment, I wasn’t expecting much anyway but when we checked in all of us where left in shock!
Never mind old and basic-that is acceptable, but dirty and unsafe No!
At least two out of six beds had dirty bedding, stained pillows and ripped bed bases, felt like someone brought them off the street! Piles of dust on the shelves, skirtings and wardrobes.
Kitchen was filthy, broken cabinets, dirt and rot inside them, you could go on and on!
Definitely avoid, if I can upload the pictures you’d be left in shock!
Stayed for 2 days early February and hotel has had a transformation! Compared to last years stay. The beer is amazing. The staff was so courteous and polite. ||I will be visiting again in March with the family this time.
This is without a doubt the WORST hotel I have ever stayed in, from the second me and my heavily pregnant partner stepped through the door there was problem after problem after problem.
.We pre booked a room with a double bed and a single on the side, apon arrival we where sent to a twin single, when aproached about the mistake we where informed it was the only free room in the hotel despite us prebooking.
.After settling into our rooms we became hungry and asked if we could see a menu, we where then informed the kitchen was and would remain closed all weekend, there was also a hot water urn in the corridoor that was not turned on or refilled during our stay so hot drinks where imposible to have as well.
.After 10:30pm we recieved 3 seperated calls on our door from hotel staff informing us that we had been placed in the wrong room and we had to move rooms and would be charged an extra £30 on top, we packed ready to move rooms when we told we could stay in our room but would still incure the extra charge regardless, they also informed us they had completely lost our information and booking detailed before we had even arrived, admitidly complimentry drinks where offered but by this time stress and upset levels where too high and as my partner is quite obviously in late pregnancy would not benifit from this rather small gesture. The next morning we where offered another room but only 5 minutes before we left the hotel for the whole day due to a wedding and simply didn't have time to transfere so had no choice but to remain in the room we where in.
.We return to our room at 8pm to get some quiet rest due to expecting baby and a long journey the next day, withing an hour of being in our room excessivly loud music starts blaring through the floor. I go downstairs to enquire and find there is both and incredibly loud disco DIRECTLY BELOW the rooms AND a live band in the next room, I ask at the desk to speak to the manager and I get directed to everybody EXCEPT the manager! All who are completely unsympothetic, uncaring and complete jobsworths at the very best and inform us it is advertised on the website, we chexked the site, It's not advertised even slightly. when I explain about the noise and the effect its having on myseld and my partner they coldly respond with. "Theres nothing we can do about the music, expect it to go on till at least 1am and if your partner has any problems im sure theres a hospital near by" within and hour of this conversation which is now nearly 11pm at night we have had enough and inform the staff we cant deal with it anymore and are leaving to which we got no responce. Just a cold stare. To which we took the 200 mile journey home in preference to staying another second.
Other honourable mentions.
.hot water in the showers did not work
.bugs found in room
.Stairs on landing damged and unstable
.damp and moult througout the whole building internally and externally.
.whole place stunk of stale beer and mould
.beds not properly made and rooms not cleaned during the day.
All in all a horrible experience and I urge anybody who is considoring staying here to keep away and find somewhere else. We only stayed one night out of the planned two and I'm surprised we stayed that long.
The room does not match the pictures they show online,we got a dungeon with a skylight window we could not open. No internet, TV didn't work,no room cleaning, and loud people in the bar making noise till 2/3 p.m.
Better to get a tent and enjoy Brecon Beacons.
Had a night in the red lion and I was man handled out by the door staff, a drunken man went for me and I defended myself by hitting out. The man wasn't man handled out only me. When i spoke to the manager, he was nothing buy rude to me..
This place is very dirty, carpets stinking, glasses are dirty and the toilets are falling apart. Wouldn't recommend this place to a homeless person never mind anyone else
