Lovely warm cosy pub. Good selection of beers. The owner / manager made us (and our dogs) feel very welcome. Good atmosphere and vibe - really pretty Christmas decorations. The free mince pies were great! Thank you.
Had a brilliant time here for Sunday lunch. The landlord is really friendly and makes you feel welcome, the best part was free pool and darts! Sunday roast very reasonable at £10.99 and food was good for the price, with plenty of it. Everything reasonably priced including locally-made jams and chutneys. Quirky pub with its own train station (easy to get to from Exeter); if sat outside you can watch the trains coming past. Should be more old-school country pubs like this, has a lot of charm to it and we had a great time.
Not sure if it is a hotel as in a place to sleep but it is a really friendly pub and restaurant. It was a 5 minute drive from from our holiday cottage and it was well worth it. My husband and my parents all had fish and chips while I had jacket potato with chilli and cheese. All very good food.
The pool table and darts were free to play. The proprietor was very friendly. There was a shooting party at the pub and despite there being around 15 to 20 of them they did not disturb the peaceful environment.
If I had been aware that the pub was so close I probably would have eaten there for the whole of my trip, but we only found it on our last night there.
I can seriously say that if I am in the area again I will definitely be returning to the Portsmouth arms for food and friendly banter, and a game of pool or two.
Stayed a night and it was warm and comfortable with nice hot shower. Bed had a mattress protector on but had no bottom sheet. ||A little disappointed we couldn’t make a cuppa as no sugar or coffee. Stayed for lunch which was nice and hot and lots of vegetable and meat was nice. But gravy was packet and the stuffing was a hard ball. Landlord was a mixture of very nice on arrival but was grumpy end of night with a couple of locals who were talking to us and it was a little uncomfortable although he did apologise in the morning. So value option if you’re near by . Plus was free games of pool .
Steve & Karen were the best hosts that you could ask for, we stayed for dinner 3 nights in a row and tried a different dish each night. The food was incredible and cooked to perfection every night. The pub has a very cozy and inviting atmosphere, the log burner was lovely considering how cold the temperature was outside. The kids enjoyed playing pool and couldn't wait to go back each night. This pub is a hidden gem and an asset to the village. The beer is also worth a mention as it's nicely chilled and very fresh.|I can't recommend this pub enough and I hope to be re visiting soon.
Popped in for a drink after a day at the beach, ended up staying for Sunday dinner which was amazing. Very large portions and all locally sourced, ended up staying until the early hours. Landlord was very friendly and told us about the history of the pub which was a nice touch, would definitely go again
Birthday party for friend, great food and Steve ( and staff) Where the ultimate professionals , delivering top food and a great atmosphere and evening , definitely goin again
Friendly, family orientated pub. Basic fare, burgers, curry, fish and chips.
Free pool and darts. Very friendly landlord.
Provided a kids size pool cue so we could have a (very bad and slow) game of pool. Apologies if you were waiting for the table!
