My wife and I went for Sunday lunch on 28/4/24. We were a bit wary as the previous time we were there we walked out of the restaurant. BUT it is now under new ownership so we thought we'd try it again. WHAT A CONTRAST. The Hotel and restaurant have been completely refurbished over the last 5 months. The decor is modern, clean and welcoming. The new owner is a very experienced restauranteur and had previous restaurants in Jersey. They actually knew about wine and their produce is locally sourced. The menu is good with just the right number of choices. The service was good, the prices reasonable. We did not have to wait long for our meals to come. When they did they were well cooked, the portions were reasonable too. We could have had extra vegetables at no extra cost but we didn't need them. WE WERE COMPLETELY BLOWN OVER BY THE DIFFERENCE THE NEW OWNER HAS MADE. It is now an excellent retaurant to eat in. We are local and our next time at the restaurant will be for the Wednesday Steak night! We thoroughly recommend them.
Made a return visit to where I lived many years ago. Heard about The Market Hotel from friends, to use as a base, and wasn't disappointed! Newly reopened after an extensive, yet tasteful renovation, was delighted with the area, ( perfect for exploring a beautiful part of the countryside). The decor and ambiance, together with "mine host's" charm and friendly manner, obviously very experienced in making their clients needs a priority make this a must visit. Also worth mentioning, as one of the owners, is an excellent Chef, you will certainly not go hungry, choosing from their menu, of many home cooked dishes.
Firstly I would like to make people aware after reading reviews that this establishment is now under new ownership and has been open for approximately 2 weeks now after a full renovation.
My friend and I live locally and couldn’t wait to see what it was like as it’s in a prime location in Alton. We were not disappointed. We went in without a booking and were greeted by the staff whose customer service was second to none. It was a Wednesday and they have a steak night on which we both had which was great value for money with a bottle of wine. Lovely atmosphere now and friendly smiling faces. Cannot wait for the sunshine to come out as this will be the place to be in the summer for sure in the market square beer garden. Thankyou to the team again and we will be back
New owners so tried this out and it's well worth it owners.staff Atmosphere first class just had Sunday lunch and must say best I've had (apart from the wifes) we finished with apple crumble wow definitely going back
I rarely leave reviews, but this one is absolutely called for.
You will not find a friendlier atmosphere, the staff are so beyond kind and compassionate and lovely, it makes a real difference. They go so far out of their way and above their responsibilities to take care of anyone that walks through their front door. In an increasingly difficult World it is rare to find special gems and that is exactly what this place and people are. Specials gems. I will continue to return to this venue for as long as this team/family is in charge and I will do so in the happy knowledge that I will have a good time, be taken care of and looked out for and with the cherry on top of fantastic and reasonable prices.
It is rare to find a service where the priority is the customers and not the income, but they 100% put their guests first here.
If I could have put 100 stars, I would have.
If you're looking for a warm roast dinner next weekend, come here. You will not be disappointed in any way.
I have also used their overnight accommodations and they are so attentive to tailor individual needs, it was also the easiest booking in and checking out that I've experienced this year (and I have used a variety of hotels this year).

I had a lovely stay in this hotel, Dan was welcoming and I was very satisfied with the cleanliness of the room and all the facilities provided! I had a yummy sunday roast dinner with my favourite drink! I would highly recommend the turkey!! ???? Had lunch here today, it was excellent. I had marinated Chicken thigh kebab with Greek chips, salad and pitta bread and my friend had fish and chips and peas. It was cooked to perfection and very tasty. Prices were very reasonable and staff very friendly. It's a basic pub, but excellent food.
Pretty tired decor, the bathroom in particular needed a refurb, TV remote didn't work. Loud music from bar below until 1:30am and then loud noises from the bar until around 3:30 am so not great for sleep. It was about the cheapest hotel in Alton though and conveniently situated very centrally. Staff were friendly on check in.
