Hotel was a good pick : nicely decorated room, good location midtown, beautiful lobby.
My only remark is regarding service : staff at lobby were not very customer-oriented - often chatting and felt that we were disturbing them and housekeeping ladies were not very polite.
But overall pretty happy with the choice.
We always have an amazing view of the Empire State Building. It’s near so many of our favorite spots in the city. Hands down the best customer service. Wonderful amenities. The coffee is brewed perfectly and there’s a wine hour in the evening. We stay here twice a year!
The James was a lovely little hotel in the middle of everything and yet was on a quiet street (quieter). Our room was actually large and spacious. It was a wonderful place to rest up after a day of walking and exploring. The lobby was also busy with people and it made it very inviting to join and have a coffee. Will be staying there again.
This is such a beautiful hotel and in a perfect location. Staff was friendly and helpful. Room was so very comfortable and quiet. Loved the total experience snd it will be our job to hotel next time we visit New York. The restaurant was fabulous and food was very good and prepared perfectly.
Just a word of caution. When making reservations I paid in advance (their process recommended it)....but it is non-refundable. Because my trip was canceled due to airline issues the hotel showed no grace initially. After emailing and explaining about the airlines, they did refund my money. I will never pay in advance again.
Nice hotel. Not the one in the photo. Staff were very attentive and courteous. Only negative was giant "minibar" in room. I am sure some people love it but with the rooms being New York sized I am sure there is better use of the space. Thst said I would return.
My first night at the James was horrible, the noise outside with the street work had me up at 6:30, I thought there is no way I can do this for 5 days.|This is where Nebi at the front desk came in and made my stay at the James complete!! She immediately put me in the most quiet, well lit perfect room. She helped throughout my stay with any questions or needs that I had. The James is a fantastic boutique hotel because of people like Nebi who go out of their way to make your stay complete. Thank you for a fabulous week and I would recommend the James to anyone who wants to be in such a central location.
Fantastic hotel. I booked this particular place because it is one of the few that had 2 queen beds in the area. The room was large by NY standards and the staff was always friendly and helpful. One of the elevators was always available without wait, which is unusual in the city.
The shower was particularly nice and the water got hot enough pretty quickly. Lighting in the bathroom was good. The bathroom door was a barn door, and it didn't have a lock. It was fine for us but might not be ideal for everyone. A few times we slid the door too far and couldn't open it back because there's no interior handle. Three of the four of us had to be rescued at least once by a family member, but it was not a big deal for us, but again, might not be ideal for everyone.
The TV was nice and had cable channels, although we did not watch TV much. It was more like background noise. The WIFI was relatively fast and I only had to log in the first day. The A/C got cold enough, but I turned the temp up one day because I was freezing and it took a few days to get back as cold as my family likes it (They like it cold enough to hang meat. I'm always cold, so again, no issue for me.)
There could have been more lighting in the bedroom and with three women (myself and two 20-something year old daughters) an extra full length mirror or two would have been nice. (There were two almost-full length mirrors in the wardrobe.) There were enough outlets, USB and plug in to charge phones.
I found the bed and pillows super comfy, although my family found them too soft. I slept like a baby.
I consider this a tall-person room, because I could not reach the peep hole or the magnifying mirror that was built into the bathroom mirror. (I'm 4'10, my daughter is 5'1 and she could reach the peephole if she stood on her toes.)
Great location, we walked to everything. So many places to eat and shop it's unreal. We did not do breakfast at the hotel but we did get the coffee--there's no coffee maker in the room, FYI- and I think the hotel coffee was the best coffee I drank while we were there. I thought coffee was supposed to be a THING in NY, but I was disappointed with the weak coffee served in the cafes (Starbucks was also off its game, but that's kind of hit or miss.)
We stayed 7 nights. I loved this location because the subway is convenient if you need to travel further, but the area is not as touristy and busy as the Times Square area we stayed for Thanksgiving.
It's a boutique hotel so expect the room service and mini bar to be pricey, but then it seems everything in NYC is pretty pricey. Room service was fast and delicious. They went above and beyond.
We were happy that our room was available when we arrived at 11:00 a.m. so we didn't have to stow our bags at the hotel and entertain ourselves until regular check in.
All in all, this is a great hotel, with a good vibe and a friendly, helpful staff.
