We turned up unplanned during a walk from Coggeshall to Halstead. It was surprising to find the cafe busy and almost full on a Wednesday lunch time. The food is good and the service is friendly, so they must have built up a loyal following. Some years ago I remember eating outside while the kids played on garden toys, they had a nice secure summer garden behind the cafe, hopefully that is still benign used in warmer weather.
Been going to this tea room for many years, meeting up with friends who have 2 hour drive to get there. Prices had really increased very expensive for the food they are providing. Booked a table as I am know they can get busy I was advised they wanted a deposit, which I had never been asked for before and was told this was because people had not turned up for their bookings. So I duly paid £5 per head and was at not point informed this was non refundable. Unfortunately on the day a member of the party had a family crisis so could not attend. When I went to pay the bill I questioned the total as it seemed very expensive for the 4 meals and drinks the rest of us had. I was then informed by the waitress that she only took £20 deposit of the bill as someone hadn’t turned up. On arrival only 2 tables had customers and on leaving there was also many empty tables, at no point were customers made to wait or turned away. The manager then appeared who forcefully stated that everyone was told the deposit was non refundable implying I was a liar. If I had known I would not have wasted my time complaining. A very unpleasant and unprofessional experience of which I suggest this lady leaves the business and lets someone else run before it goes out of business. I will not be returning and will be going to the Swan or the Shoulder of Mutton both close by which I can highly recommend for food, price and service.
We visited after some painting with the kids and friends at the Essex Pottery Studio. We saw the Cafe / Tea room signs and to be honest wasn't expecting much... but it was actually very good.
On arrival we was shown to some seats, ordered food and got drinks etc. Plenty of options for food and drink with some specials available too. There are kids options but a little more limited than the main menu, also whilst my daughter likes baked beans she had rather a lot of them on her plate when it came out. My lunch / dinner was great - a roast dinner Yorkshire wrap. Really nice taste, and the only improvement I would have suggested would have been the gravy.
We don't tend to have desert, especially when eating out at lunch - but the temptation was too much and we when halves with the kids. Cake was very nice (and I'm more of a cheese and biscuit desert type of person!)
Plenty of parking outside and would recommend this place - to the point of wondering if we should pop in again once the decorations have been finished at the pottery studio and we pop down to pick them up...!
Found this place after a drive in the country and been back again since, service is very good, I would advise to book as it does get busy, the toastie was cooked perfectly, and the cakes, wow, what a selection and taste amazing. The location is really nice, the actual tea room is loaded with natural beams and has a lovely feel to it, pricing is the high end of average but worth every penny, there is also a little shop next door which is worth a visit. Parking is not bad at all, we've manage a space every time.
Great food, freshly made. Cakes are delicious, plenty to choose from. Good value for money. We've been lucky to get a table each time we visit. But maybe best to book in advance as it seems to be getting very busy.
New owners are doing a fantastic job. Lovely polite staff.
I visited The Hyacinth Tearoom today, with a friend, for lunch. The tearoom is so welcoming. We were greeted by friendly staff who were very attentive. We ordered toasted sandwiches which were delicious. The food was piping hot and we were served quickly. There is an amazing selection of home made cakes, all of which look fab. I had to take a slice home to try - it would have been rude not to ???? I would highly recommend this lovely little tea room - a real asset to the area.
Came with a couple of girlfriends for a late lunch. Soup and toasted sandwiches, soup was delicious leek and potato, my favourite, it was thick, hot and very tasty. Would have liked a bigger bowl but was plenty with the sandwich. Would reccomend the milkshakes, proper treat. We enjoyed our lunch very much in fact we have booked to come back for afternoon tea.
Lovely hidden gem. Great food menu variety of small lunch and bigger meals and friendly service. Recommend the milkshakes. Snickers one was lovely. If not got room for cake takeaway for later. Lots of choice of cakes.
