Popped in for a light bite after a woodland walk and we were thoroughly impressed. It's like stepping back in time to a proper old public house with the black timber beams, great beer and amazing food. Everything was cooked perfectly, the selection of veg is impressive and value for money is unbelievable. Will definitely go back if I am ever back in this part of the world.
Perfect pub lunch - great food, served quickly, generous portions and very reasonable prices. Sunny outdoor seating area and staff were so friendly and welcoming. Recommend the fishfinger sandwich!
A very friendly welcoming pub.
The landlord and his staff go out of their way to make customers feel valued.
Very well kept beers smashing food, nice atmosphere.
I love staying here. Third time this year. It is a very old pub with a very old castle next to it and a very old church. Get it? Oh and it is in the Forest of Dean so you come here for the great food, lovely places to walk and visit and fit in with the lovely locals. if you want Premier Inn, stay at Premier Inn!! It can't be modernised and they have done their best with the WiFi (it's actually better than what I get at home).|I am a wheelchair user with limited walking. The stairs are understandably steep but Ian and Pat were always on hand to help without me feeling a nuisance and Harry even volunteered to get the battery of my mobility scooter out of my car and charge it up.|A fridge on the landing was handy for the continental breakfast if you wanted it. I asked Pat to put it there as it seemed ridiculous her setting a table for just me. Good grief, I had half and the rest was used as a picnic. Thick cut ham from a joint, great selection of local cheeses, wonderful artisan breads, fruit, yoghurt etc. Pat does not do the breakfast everyday - she does need a break now and then, but the St. Briavels Deli, opposite, opens at 9.00 and does great hot sandwiches etc.|I have stayed in two of the three rooms and both are comfortable and en suite. ( sure I stayed there years ago when they weren't - I was born and bred in the area so have been coming down for years).|Was asked every day if there was anything I wanted. Lovely Ladies who waited on and sorted the rooms, I know a few by name but would not want to leave anyone out but thanks for looking after me.|Saw the review about the signage. As an ex Local, there never used to be any signs because if any of us had tried to climb the trees or stamp on the garden, we would have got a clip around the ear, and as for letting the dogs sit on the seat.....|The food is amazing and everyone goes the extra mile to make you feel at home. Everything is home made, including the mint sauce etc. Tim, Chef, excels at cooking fish but all the food is good.|The first time I stayed since Tim, Pat and Ian took over, they made me very welcome and that was before they realised my family go back generations in the village. Best Licensees here by far over the last 30 years or so.
Well kept beers. Superb evening meal. Good value and cyclists portion sizes. Tasty and well presented. The puddings looked spectacular, again a proper portion. More restaurant standard than standard pub food. Breakfast was a very pleasant surprise. It was advertised as a continental breakfastl but it was so much more. Local cheeses , home made beer bread. Salami and regional cured meats. A secure shed for 4 bikes was provided. The rooms were clean and comfortable with an excellent shower. Friendly and very helpful landlady and staff. No pretentious twaddle there.
We had dinner at this lovely pub while staying at the YHA hostel next door. The food was great but it was the service that really made it stand out. They were so welcoming and kind to us as a group with four children, adapting food and talking nicely to the children. It makes a huge difference when your children are welcomed rather than seen as a pain!
Tried several pubs within walking distance of local campsite and this is the best. Lovely location, friendly, good food and good value. We went one evening for the sing around session which was really inclusive and welcoming. We will be back.
Had the most fantastic Sunday lunch at the George Inn whilst staying in Saint Briavels. I have never seen so much meat on a Sunday dinner. We all had pretty much an entire dinner plate of beef each, with plenty of sharing vegetables, and there was no hassle when we requested extra gravy and bread for dipping.
One of our party had the fish platter - wow! There was about £30 worth of fish (supermarket prices) on her plate, and it came with additional sides.
All of our desserts were outstanding - especially the pineapple and pear compote.
Incredible value. 2 huge courses with 2-3 alcohol drinks for around £30 each. Quick, professional and friendly service, with a complimentary birthday treat for one our party members who turned 40 that weekend. It was really kind of them.
Lovely pub and experience all around. Will be happy to return ???? x
