Great restraunt, if you're looking for French food locally I would strongly recommend stopping by here at least once. Good mix of traditional food and more modern cooking. Staff are also very friendly and the whole place has a good feel to it.
Lovely place with a nice atmosphere and friendly service. All the food was great, my only criticism would be the menu is a little confused, the majority of the main courses aren't french which is probably not how it should be. Some more simple french classics woild be great. Aside from the confusing menu we had a great time so it is still recommended.
The French House is a new addition to Lordship Lane and a much better fit to the area than the bar it replaced. Decked out in art from 60s France and with YéYé music on the stereo it might seem to be laying it on a bit thick, but this cosy café-cum-bar has a really authentic atmosphere, making it the perfect place to sit and take your time with a drink and some amazing French and Alsatian food.
The menu offers simple bar bites, as well authentic french mains and incredibly generous portions of desert (if you're having a tart I recommend sharing!). The Coffee and Beer are also excellent, sourced from London's Square Mile Roasters and Camden Brewery respectively.
The staff are also very friendly, especially the owner, who was more than happy to talk us through the menu, and Brian the dog, who happily pottered around asking the guests for a pet!
All in all, a great spot with a good mix of local character and genuine continental vibe.
Had a long day out in Dulwich and decided to end it in the French House. We arrived early, at around 6pm and had drinks while the kitchen was opening. The Kir and the Picon Bierre were lovely. The chef was late, but the food was worth it! We even got a delicious cake on the house to make up for it. Everything from service, to music, to food was incredible. I would highly recommend it.
Tiny French-styled eaterie..cleverly done..love the loo! French 60s and 70s muted television pop music show , and wonderful piped pop music from that era too! On the small side , haven't been downstairs, but I imagine it must be claustrophobic as all basement areas tend to be. They seem to have a 'baby and toddler' day on some days if the week . Limited menu, but I had a tasty meal and filing dessert. They do a tasty apple pie, that sits tantalisingly on the counter.. Very friendly, smiley staff, greet you in French if you say you are learning the language!
Don't understand why this place has such good reviews. I had boeuf bourginnone which was gristly and unpleasant. My partner had a weird cheesy vegetarian dish which was simply some veg with cheese chucked on it. I know that vegetarian food is limited in French restaurants but it's not as if the beef was any good either. Definitely the worst place I've eaten in East Dulwich.
After 2 years living in the area we decided with my husband to give it a try today based on the positive reviews. Unfortunately the food was so bad that we had to go and have again lunch afterwards. I ordered a croque monsieur and instead I got a croque madame, but anyway it was soggy and tasteless. My husband had a cassoulet that looked like one of those that comes in a can but with more water, it was bland and incipid. It is a shame as the place has a nice vibe but we will never go back for food. I wonder if they changed the chef considering the previous reviews.
A really cozy place and the nicest staff. The best latte i've had since i moved to London. Dog (allowed to come in) and childfriendly (they have a corner with lots of toys). Lovely!
