Despite having a stand in chef , the meal was very good. Reduced menu but we were happy with fish and chips for the ladies and steak pie for the men . So much meat in the pie and it was more like whale and chips ! Homemade chips as well. Keep it up ! |Also good to see locals in just having a drink .
Staying locally and this place was recommended for Sunday Lunch. Lovely friendly staff, good choice of drinks, great food, in huge quantities, couldn't manage a dessert. Highly recommended!
Visiting family in the area and went for a meal one Friday night.
The pub was quite empty. Small menu, 8 main meal choices. Was told no fish available ( on a Friday!) Chose other options. 3 of us had burgers, should've come with onion rings. When asked where they were, was told no batter left. How hard is it to make batter!
2 of the burgers should've had bacon, no bacon! Asked but no one came back to us.
The food we had was lovely but wasnt inclined to stay longer for dessert or more drinks after the lack of concern for our missing items.
Went to pay at the bar, wasn't offered a discount for our missing items, had to ask. Was then quieried by the chef/manager ? Who was sat in the. Argued that bacon shouldn't be on the burger!! The barmaid had to get a menu to prove to him. Offered £5 off the bill.
Unlikely to go back for food.
Fabulous meal. All 3 of us had something very different - pie, burger and salt & pepper chicken. All were cooked superbly and couldn't be faulted. Lovely, efficient staff and cosy atmosphere.
Came in Thursday evening had food and drinks Jordan & his team did a great job
Can highly recommend the steak pie the chips and gravy was out of this world
My wife is coeliac gluten free she had pork with pepper corn sauce and chips one of the best gluten free meals she’s ever had????
Lovely quiet country pub. Just popped in for a drink but meals look really appetising.
We visited the Dawney Arms on Sunday 11th Feb after making a reservation for a table for 2 people at 6pm. We were staying in the village for 3 days . We arrived at 5.35pm looking forward to a roast dinner. We were met in the doorway by a staff member who stated in a not very friendly way "we just finished serving food 5 mins ago. We said we had a 6pm booking so we stood in the doorway while the staff member shouted across to the landlord behind the bar" have these got a booking?" He flicked back and forth through a book then shouted no . We explained we had a booking , he looked again, no. After much shouting across the room , and by now all the other customers staring , it was decided to go and ask chef if we could eat. The answer came back, yes, you can eat but there are no yorkshire puddings left. ( bearing in mind they were standing under a blackboard which stated food served 12 til 8 pm Sundays ). We said ok and sat down, 10 minutes later the table of 6 persons next to ours were served, huge yorkshire puddings, beef, gravy, roast and mashed potato s, and then separate dishes of veg, I counted 8 different dishes of veg going onto their table. Then 10 minutes later we were asked what we wanted, we had no menu s so we just said beef please. The beef arrived on a plate with gravy, and potatos then our one separate dish of veg arrived , the one small dish contained 2 broccoli florets, leathery and dried up, 1 spoonful of peas , a small amount of almost raw sliced carrots, and a small amount of raw sliced parsnips . What a disappointment, and to make matters worse at the till we were charged full price, and no apology either. We visit West Heslerton often as we have relatives there but we will never return to the Dawney Arms.
Great pub in a pretty village, a great find after a day's walking in the Yorkshire Wolds. We liked it so much we came back 3 times, twice for excellent food (large portions too). Very friendly staff too. Has two rooms as well apparently (but we needed 4) but their description sounded good too.
