Best KPortal Reviews
Unfortunately an underwhelming experience overall (3/5). Given the positive press and reviews, I was expecting so much more, however even though there were substantial negatives, the food is quite good.
We had booked for Sunday lunch. Unfortunately, when booking they had got dietary needs wrong, which led to one of our party without a suitable meal choice- the way this was approached by owner was a little rude in my opinion and very little apology was offered initially for their mistake (an initial apology and glass of complimentary glass of wine of something of the like customer service wise would have been appreciated, but did not occur from the owner, which was surprising to me given the reviews for the place). Sunday lunch for the meat eaters overall was fair/good however.
General service from waiting staff has a lot to be desired imo and is not up to the level of some other local pubs/restaurants (considering its status as one of Pembrokeshire's best). Most service staff were introverted and seemed to lack enthusiasm and friendliness for interaction with customers.
Condiments on the table were nasty, unhygienic and not appealing at all to a pleasant experience (see photo)- this shows a lack of attention to detail and the place would be nicer with some glass vinegar bottles and more restaurant quality salt/pepper pots.
The restaurant area is in huge need of a revamp as it's very old, very dark and very dingy and imo has lost any of the 'character' feeling that I think they are trying to go for- it just doesn't work for me (it feels like an old people's home).
Toilets need modernising as are very outdated as are the facilities.
Just a nice village pub.
Visited for a family members birthday party so food and alcohol sampled....
Nice village pub with a small restaurant area, we had around 30 guests and if you were to start trying to sit more then it would start to feel cramped in the dedicated area and would need to start filling the lounge bar seating. Not ideal but then it's a village pub after all.
Typical cosy decor for a village Inn and it has a small outdoor sitting area for nice weather, there isn't much provision for children to play though which is a shame as it seems a perfect place for a pint in the summer but without a play area you won't be staying long. There's a sign on the bar saying that misbehaving children will be sold to the Circus and whilst its somewhat humouring and ment tongue in cheek it gives a glimpse that perhaps their best left at home.
Food, nothing of note on offer just the typical meals you'd expect at a reasonable price and of reasonable quality, one of the guests had fish that was undercooked but again it's a village pub serving 30 odd meals so a mistake should be accepted. My meal a Gammon steak was a good sized meal and nicely cooked so no complaints. The service was good with the waitresses very polite and helpful aswell.
Expensive to drink here though, a pint of larger shandy was priced at £3.50 the same as a bottle of Kopparberg which I thought was quite expensive for just a shandy. So expensive in fact that I had to query the price of the Kopparberg thinking it was that which was bumping the price up. I didn't drink the larger straight (driving) but at that price for a shandy then I would expect it to be over £4 a pint.
It deserves 3 stars and would give it more if there was just something about the place that made us want to return but without any recreation for the kids and alcohol priced like Marston's we can't see much point.
Beautiful Sunday lunch thank you Mathew and staff, spot on ????????
Loved it here. Matt and his customers made us so welcome. The food was superb and well priced. You have to try the pineapple upside down cake..... Haven't had in years and it was lovely. Thanks to Matt and the team
Absolutely fantastic. Are as a group of 10, everyone was stuffed and thought their meal was delicious. Nothing was too much trouble, did a delicious vegan meal just for me. Probably the best pub meal ( vegan) I’ve ever had.
Today we have had the BEST Sunday Roast dinner ever, it was second to none. Hubby had lamb which melted in the mouth, son had beef which was beautiful and tender and I had the vegetarian mushroom and brie pie which was amazing. All served with Yorkshire puds, the guys had pigs in blankets, I had stuffing, crispy roasters, beautiful mash and the separate platter with veg was to die for. Leeks in cream sauce, butternut squash gratin and a medley of carrots, green beans, peas and sweetcorn. Lashings of gravy, it was truly lovely. The toffee and pecan roulade and the chocolate brownie were equally lovely. All of this was served by very friendly staff who smiled and chatted amiably with our 12 year old son who gave a rating of 100 out of 10. I have been several times before many years ago and remembered it being excellent which is why we went today. It did not disappoint but if anything has got even better. Compliments to Matthew the chef/patron...from a fellow chef...
First visit, not to be our last, lovely meal and good service nice selection of beer too.
Excellent……thank you!
We’ve eaten twice here this week as we’re in the village on holiday.
Lovely gammon/ curry/scampi and fish all with chips on a Friday.
My son had booked the four of us for Mother’s Day Sunday lunchtime. The best roast dinners I’ve had in a pub….the roasties and gravy in particular were superb….great selection of veg and meats. Yum! And on a busy day where you can get really ripped off in some places, but absolutely not here. Thanks too for the thoughtful gift for us mums❤️
Wanted to mention too the young staff behind the bar….great work guys…friendly, smiley and helpful…you’re really getting it right.
All in all just a really nice pub…with some great food prepared by people who can actually cook, not just warm it up or deep fry it!,…..and lovely staff. Thanks!
