We decided to eat here after an 8 hour drive through France, arriving via the Eurotunnel and just wanted somewhere cosy, dog friendly with good food. We trusted our fellow Google reviewers, and are glad we did.
We phoned to book and on arriving were offered a choice of tables to make sure our dog was as comfortable as possible.
Having spent 6 weeks in warm Spanish weather, the food here was just what we needed to cope with the cold January weather. Parsnip and chilli soup for me, and pea & ham soup for my husband. Evidently freshly home made, packed with flavour and a good large bowl.
We both chose pies for mains - one steak & ale, the other chicken & ham - couldn't fault them, packed with filling, fresh pastry topping, piping hot. If we hadn't had starters we might have had room for desserts.
Prices are decent, atmosphere is pleasant, a mix of people eating and others just in for a drink. Decor traditional and a very welcoming team of staff.
We went here this evening after spending quite some time, trying to toss up between here and the Kings Head. To be fair, the Kings Head might well be very good, but what we found at The Butt of Sherry, was that the food was very good. My wife had the ham egg and chips and was not happy that the egg was crispy around the edges (no pleasing some people). However, I had the steak and ale pie with mash and vegetables which was amazing. The pie was constructed of a “ramekin” of filling with a puff pastry top. I have never had a pie with so much filling. The flavour was really good and I pulled a bay leaf out of mine – it had been really well cooked and had an amazing flavour. Delicious. Only I had desert which was Bread and butter pudding. This was a little disappointing as it was a slice of bread and butter pudding “traybake”. It had been reheated in a microwave and was tough. That said, the flavour was pretty good and there was a very generous helping of pouring cream. The Guinness was good
So I wasn't sure at first to eat here. From the outside, it just looks like a bit of a rundown pub. However, after looking at what menu we could find online, we decided to give it a good.
Firstly, there were two ladies working, and both were friendly, happy, and a pleasure to be around. One of the ladies was very funny and down to earth.
We were treated to table service with a good selection of draught and bottles available. The food menu was really good with a wide choice to suit most. We were told today was pie night (two pies and a bottle of wine £35)
My friend had the chicken, ham, and leak pie, and I had the hunters chicken. Both of them looked amazing and tasted even better. We also had a side of garlic bread and onion rings for the table. The food here was really good. Pipping hot, full of flavour, and definitely worth the money.
Staff were amazing. Definitely recommend if you're in the area. However, my only advice is to book to avoid any disappointment
Absolutely amazing food. The lamb pie was lovely and you get so much meat. It was very tender and you get loads of potatoes and veg.
Very good value for money.
Lovely staff too.
Best pie I have ever eaten. Lovely pub, great staff and very friendly service.
My partner and I ate hear last night and I can honestly say the fish pie I had was Delicious. My partner went for the minted Lamb pie and that was also Amazing, Staff and service were first class and very attentive, would definitely recommend this pub and the Amazing dishes they create ????
