ULVA is a magical place and it starts with indicating to the boatman that you want to be picked up in the small ferry boat.
By sliding an indicator board to red the very friendly boatman comes over from ULVA to pick you up at the pier. A few minutes later you are on the small island of Ulva.
Our first stop was the “Boathouse” restaurant & cafe for coffee and cheese scones , both tasty and of good quality.
A decent walk around the island followed before heading back to the “Boathouse“ for some homemade soup and bread. All very tasty again and there was a good selection of items on the menu.
A really nice place to go on a beautiful island, we will definitely be back !
Wonderfully surprised lunch experience in this remote island. It has a creative, thoughtful and healthy menu. Freshly made everyday. Nice view with friendly and warm service. Highly recommended.
Loved everything about the Boathouse, the friendly service, the views and especially the food. If it's a nice dry day, definitely give this place a visit. The langoustines are amazing and the implements to get all the meat out are provided.
Blown away by this place… It is truly outstanding. We’ve travelled all over the Highlands and Islands and there were very few places that matched this place for quality of food and friendliness of service. The lobster sandwiches were served on delicious, homemade bread and were generously filled. The coffee was very good, and the cakes were sensational: The orange cake was moist and flavoursome and genuinely surprisingly good, whilst the sticky gingerbread cake was very bit as rich and tasty as it looked. Cute little building with a very welcoming vibe too, all added to by the experience of getting the tiny ferry over to it. If you’re on Mull go out of your way to visit this place as I’d rate it as better than anywhere else we visited on Mull or Iona.
We have been visiting for many years, but this was our first visit since the new owners took over and we were not disappointed.
The langoustine were fresh and full of flavour, the bread fresh and warm and the garlic butter to die for.
Cake and tea followed with a fresh and light Victoria sponge which was a delight.
The short boat crossing to the Boathouse is all part of the fun, so don’t miss this wonderful cafe and enchanting island.
We paddled out the bay near Ulva and circled around the island to arrive back at the Boathouse. For those on foot and not water sporting, the £6 ferry looks to take under 3 minutes and runs as required when they see people waiting.
The staff and chef were just wonderfully friendly (as all on Mull are). The menu changes everyday. We had friends go the day before and had very different but equally delightful fresh food from the waters.
The crab and langoustines were our personal favourites and they weren't shy about showing off the best way to crack them.
We sipped a fresh coffee and a cider and purchased their very own seafood chutney (sweet and spicy varieties available).
Really made our afternoon returning after a paddle to delectables such as these.
Indoor and outdoor seating was available and we were on a good day. It might be tough on a windier or rainier day as there aren't many tables inside.
Bathrooms were also surprisingly up to date. We expected far less from this establishment and left with a cheery goodbye. Until the next time.
The short water ‘taxi’ across the harbour. A slightly hesitant small dog not sure of boat, but expectant humans looking forward to their second trip to Ulva. I really love the place. Great that it’s now community owned and there’s a sense of progress since last visit (when islanders buy-out was secured). Ooh and I don’t usually photograph my food but lunch was just right. And you can sit upstairs too.
Fantastic Food. If you are visiting the Isle of Mull make time to go to the small community owned Island of Ulva and if nothing else eat at The Boathouse. Freshly prepared interesting dishes, including vegan options, with things like seaweed chutney which was delicious. If the weather is good there is plenty of outdoor seating although there is lots inside too. They are dog friendly as well. Homemade bread and cakes by people who really know what they are doing. We had the sticky ginger cake, but they all looked exceptional. So what are you waiting for? Get yourself here, summon the ferryman to come over and pick you up. You won't be disappointed.
