Summary: we have been here a couple of times - once when it was opened after new refurb and today. The refurbishment is good - it’s made more space for tables and everything is quite accessible. It does look nice as well which is lovely. The prices are a bit steep and some I don’t think are comparable. Service staff can sometimes be looking/eyeballing each other when it’s half an hour before closing or just after to seem annoyed that people are coming through the door. For me it’s the prices - totally understand that the cost of living has risen but I don’t think all the cakes should be the same price and some of the drinks are quite steep. We used to visit regularly before 23/24, but now just maybe come out as a treat because of this. We do tend to use the other cafe a bit more on the Marina.
After refurb feedback: The first time we had an order of 5 hog roast warmed up and 5 hot chocolates and waited outside in the cold for 20/25 minutes for the hot chocolates to be made. They came in a takeaway cup and were meant to be deluxe (costing over £5 each) and due to the cream, it was like half a hot chocolate - we won’t order those again. Hog roasts were very nice.
Today’s feedback: we had a cake, brownie and two normal hot chocolates with each item costing £4 each totalling £16 which I think is quite expensive. The cake I agree at £4 as it’s a big slice, but not compared to the brownie (picture added), yet same price? Although we were treating ourselves, we commented to each other that we could have got two carvery dinners for just a little more…so was it worth it? Still debating.
Place on both occasions was clean and tidy, but the staff do seem to be slow when it’s not two drinks and a cake each.
Visited for breakfast. Haven't been for a while and loved the new look. Food was delicious. Ordered the breakfast bagel and asked for the sausage and bacon to be cooked really well and it arrived perfect.
Staff very pleasant. Will definitely be back before too long.
Very busy when we arrived the two tables vacant had previous customer pots piled up so using our heads put all pots on one table and used a baby wipe to clean table when the girl eventually cleared the other table she never cleaned it so the couple who came and sat next to us I gave them a wipe to clean their own table. The girl at the till was struggling with the till screen so i slowed my order down to help; two coffees without sprinkles (they came with sprinkle) two fruit scones she never asked me if I wanted jam butter or cream and closed my order when I asked about jam she looked put out as if it was my fault then when the order came only one scone and cream costing god knows how much with the jam and butter I ordered . The same girl came by and I told her about the missing scone she checked came back telling me there was only one on the order and I had only been charged for one my wife said leave it now I’m not bothered and the girl gave an almost sarcastic sorry as she turned away and scuttled off .
The location is lovely, the menu has a good selection but by the time we got our cutlery the food was cold as they bring it with your drinks after the food has come out. The waitress was extremely rude, which we have noticed numerous times. My husband went inside to get the cutlery after she told him it would be brought out with the drinks. Our food was getting cold so he went to get it himself not saying anything. She stood there repeatedly shaking her head loudly saying “why do I bother” which was rude, unpleasant and unnecessary. The two tables next to me commented on her rudeness too and it made everyone feel uncomfortable. When food orders are brought out she yells at the top of her voice which doesn’t make for a relaxing time. We’ve had several poor experiences in terms of rudeness here and won’t be returning. It’s a shame as it would be a great place if they offered better customer service and manners
My Mum was sold a couple of Scones out of a clear container the other day, she asked what scones they were and was told they were Cherry. Got home to find it had loads of almonds in. Absolutely terrible, allergens like this should be clearly labelled by law. Unbelievable this could happen, should be ashamed.
You claim that you cannot guarantee any of your foods are nut free but I think labelling the food with allergens that they clearly contain would be a start! It’s not enough for the safety net being that the staff should inform customers, and on this case they ‘forgot’, that’s absurd and could’ve resulted in at least one fatality. I really can’t believe these weren’t labelled, it’s a disgrace and massively irresponsible and needs looking into.
Spacious seating, lovely & clean & the food wow - we had the French toast with bacon & the avocado with feta it tasted as good as it looked
Had a bacon roll today. If your going to serve cheap smoked streaky bacon then you need to cook it well. The fat on the bacon was white and tough (4 slices), didn't taste any smokiness. No butter on roll so very dry. £6 for this, won't be having another - awful.
Just got back from a trip to the beetroot tree at Mercia Marina. We had hot chocolate and I had a fruit scone with cream, jam and butter for which each item was an add on! The scone was burnt and dry as a bone. My husband had a hog roast roll (he had to go back to the till when this had failed to arrive to remind them. It seemed to take 3 members of staff to work out what to do!) which he found so disgusting he couldn’t eat it. These 4 items cost £17 and has to be the worst cafe meal we have ever had. We both feel quite sick now we are back home.
