Fabulous, iconic pub, always great beer. Great staff, wonderful landlady. Great food, tried the haggis for the first time, very enjoyable. The best place to drink in Chester, so relaxing.
Called into this lovely pub on a Friday night after staying close by for the week. |A lovely atmosphere, lovely vintage decor, friendly, welcoming barman/landlord, no music! - great!! The perfect little pub. |We didn't try the food, but definitely will next time. We will definitely be back. It's easy to find if you walk along the walls from the centre towards the weir.
Proper old fashioned pub , decked out with WW1 and Cheshire Regiment memorabilia. Timothy Taylor Boltmaker first class pint , kept and poured to perfection . The food is amazing, I had the liver , bacon, and onions today ....delicious, steaming hot ,fantastic on a cold January day .
It's as advertised if you want a vast selection of beers , chips , music, tv's and fruit machines you are probably best going elsewhere.
This place is an absolute gem
Fantastic atmosphere, a lovely old time feel about the place, good friendly service, but most importantly, decent beer!
A fantastic small pub with a history of 150 year’s service serving good beer to the city of Chester and its military. Quite simply put , this place is what all small independent pubs where like at the turn of the 20th century. It’s a time capsule, of a place, totally given towards and the theme of the Great War 1914-1918 .
If you’re a modern progressive millennial type who gets slightly ‘offended’ at the concept of empire and history of this country, then my advice is give it a miss, as it may well offend you ???? with the glorious patriotic early British interior of the early 1900s, and a complete delight of first war decor and posters .
Seriously, though this is a fantastically well run pub which values and follows traditional licensing hours. Always check online first , for example, they are closed on a Sunday.
The beer is good, very good . The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming and the food is utterly sublime in so much as it is the best home-made pub food you will find in the city, but not the so-called modern pub classics that are forced down in chain pubs, not here, this is totally home-cooked good standard British stuff – you won’t even find chips on the menu - mashed potato and veg with a glorious array of things like mince and tatties , haggis and curry’s all standard as they call them “trench rations “ the puddings are also to die for..
The other good thing about the Albion is that there is no music or television – you know a pub where you can go to drink and talk to people …sound like a winning combination doesn’t it .
All in all, if you want to experience pubs how they used to be in England this is the place. In the nicest possible way, I will say also it is not family friendly, in the sense of it’s a ‘traditional ‘ establishment, but by no means rude, so it’s not a place for mums and toddlers and fancy coffees
But if you want a good pint with a good steaming plate of hot food with something with custard afterwards, and saver a atmosphere and history of the 14-18 war, than this surely is not just the best pub in Chester, but I don’t argue in England…
Just off the beaten track this pub was a real find the atmosphere was wonderful like stepping back in time completely untouched the most modern thing was the electric till lovely log burner all homemade food not a chip in sight lovely friendly staff will definitely return
Fab pub and great food. Step back in time atmosphere. Loved it!
Very unusual little pub in a quiet location inside the city walls. Fabulous beer.
