700 years ago the church was at the heart of a bustling port and crossing place of the river.
Since Tudor times the river changed course and silted-up the population gradually moved away.
The south door carries the date 1630, going through it lets you step back into times gone by in a world full of medieval wall paintings.
Parking available on the road outside.
This little country church off the A29 heading South from Pulborough truly is a hidden gem. Looking at it from the outside, you would not expect the treasure of early medieval pictorial decoration that is inside! From Adam & Eve to the earliest depiction of St George in the whole of England, to stories of Jesus and the most interesting depiction of Hell inclusive of souls being boiled in a cauldron. If you are in the area, the little diversion is absolutely worth it!!
Very interesting to see how churches looked “once upon a time”
The most extraordinary little church with the oldest fresco paintings in England... go out of your way to visit, you won't be disappointed

Step into an ancient world, long gone. Wonderful calm and serenity. The frescoes are very moving and completely authentic. Well worth a stop off if you are in the area.
