Cool unpreserved castle with great views of the loch. Drive around to the south side and park along the road. There is a footpath from the road up. A lower building still has an enclosed barrel vault room you can enter. The upper level of this building is accessible, but probably not safe. The upper castle remains are on the top of the hill. There are often harbor seals on the flats below.
Lovely little place to visit if you're in the facility and like old ruins. Had to go up a drive which in the first instance seemed like a private road but once at the top was signposted to Castle so all okay.
Parked next to the loch, access to the castle along a private road to the left of the castle, then sign posted. Probably best to visit in the colder months as the interior is overgrown with nettles.
A very derelict castle but worth a look. We parked in the opposite lay-by for some lunch in our camper van and walked over. Wear long trousers or the nettles will get the better of you.
You can watch seals in the salt water Loch when you have had enough of the castle.
Interesting little castle ruin with a great view of the nature preserve. Take care on your footing! Paths are uneven and rocky. Off the beaten path with unclear/unmarked parking but a designated path (clearly marked) to walk up to the castle ruins. A nice little stop, especially if you want to see the nature preserve too.
We approached the ruin from the north east, but couldn't manage to get close to it because of high weed and nettles. A somewhat rotten wooden tread allows to get over a fence and get somewhat closer through said nettles. Got some glimpse of the wall fragments, a rusted and rotten scaffolding and a kind of vault filled with debris, wood and junk.
One additional star is for the nice surrounding (Loch Fleet) and scenery.
Hidden gem. Easy access to the castle, it's bigger than expected, views are splendid! Ypu get to enjoy views at the loch and its wildlife as well. Good for kids
It's a bit tricky to get up to the castle and it is a ruin but the view from it is well worth it!
