A really welcoming stay in a well-maintained period property (1570s). I'm a solo traveller and found the double room spacious and comfortable. A great nights sleep, hot shower, and filling breakfast to kick-start the day. Nearby to Keswick, with a bus stop up the lane (Swan Hotel). Karen, our host, was really lovely to chat with and I'm grateful for her wonderful hospitality.
We've just returned home after a two night stay at Powter Howe and what a fabulous experience it was. The property dates back to 1570 and the room where breakfast is served has furniture in it, dating back to 1665. We had an ensuite room, which was characterful and comfortable. Breakfast was a treat with a full English, home baked bread, cereals etc. The sausages were made at a local butchers and the bacon cured locally. The eggs came from the owners own hens. On arrival we had home made cakes waiting for us. There is also a real fire, which is lit for you and plenty of logs for you to keep the fire roaring. Nothing better than coming in from a night out to a roaring fire. I can't complement our hostess, Karen enough, we even had a fruit loaf and cheese supplied for some relations we hosted at the property. A lovely lady, who really went the extra mile for our party. We'd love to return one day
Lovely, charming place that is exactly what B&Bs should be. The host was wonderful throughout and it was lovely to have a long chat with her after breakfast. The room and whole house is full of character and the whole experience was so much more than just a chain hotel.
Then, the breakfast to top it off was outstanding. Quality meat products from the local butcher and fresh eggs from the chickens.
Finally, the views are out of this world.
Superb stay, thank you, I will return, this time on holiday.
Stayed here recently and it was fantastic, the host was a lovely lady and gave us lots of information about the history of the house which dates back to the tudor period, with lots of original features, great views from the rooms and easy access to walks around the lake and Barf/Lords Seat hike on the doorstep.
The fire was lit for our arrival and the breakfast was delicious. If you are looking for a quirky BnB this is perfect, just watch your head if you are tall!
What a stunning little B&Bin Thornthwaite, its part of an old Tudor building that is full of character and history, with the owner living in one half and the other half a guest house.|Lovely rooms, very traditional in styling with very few mod cons, not even a TV, however with the views from the mature garden, with the birds tweeting all around you and looking out over Bassenthwaite and the Skiddaw Fells, who needs a TV? |Great breakfast, Great host. I also bought some of her homemade jam and chutney|Take a walk down to the lakeside, or venture up to see The Bishop of Barf Stone on the hillside as the sun rises over Skiddaw.
Off the beaten track, step back in time for some honest, warm and welcoming comfort. Everything about the stay says Charm. Beautiful roaring log fire after 4pm with homemade cake and tea in china cups and saucers, lovely. Very knowledgable, interesting, helpful and welcoming hostess , was such a pleasure to chat with her. The gardens and grounds are fantastic for wildlife including woodpecker, nuthatch, blue tits, goldfinch and more. Cant wait to return, was a wonderful stay.
We were travelling through Keswick and needed a place to stay, and we ended up stumbling upon Powter Howe. When we called to reserve, we found out we would be the only couple staying for the night. When we arrived, I was in completely awe. To be honest I've never stayed in a B&B before.. but this surpassed all of my expectations. The property is absolutely stunning. When we walked in, the hostess had the a beautiful log fire already going and it felt so cozy. We were shown to our room (so cute and what a view!) and had some freshly baked cookies and warm milk waiting downstairs for us. The best part was at night - i highly suggest going outside when it's dark and looking up at the stars .. one of the most incredible things I've ever seen in my life! Safe to say, I would highly recommend this B&B and we will for sure be back!!!
Sadly only stayed for one night on our way up to Scotland. We received a warm welcome on arrival by the owner and her two lovely dogs. The location is quiet and has stunning views towards the lake. The fruit cake and brownies were a welcome treat after a busy day in Keswick which is only a 10 minute drive away. ||Our room was large and spotlessly clean with everything you could need provided and had amazing views into the gardens and towards lake Bassenthwaite.||Breakfast was fantastic with plenty of choice of cereals, toast, homemade bread and jam and of course the full english.||Well felt Covid safe as this is being managed very well with a reduced guest capacity, sanitiser as you enter the property and additional sanitiser in your room.||There is no tv or wifi which some would see as a negative but we found it a refreshing change to just sit and enjoy the amazing views.||We would not hesitate to recommend staying at this property and will hopefully be returning in the near future.||Thank you for a very welcoming stay.
