A pub… not as you know it now but as you knew it then…
April 2024
What an unexpectedly amazing experience!
We walked into the pub which was empty apart from the cat behind the bar waiting to serve us and Steve in his chair in front of the fire. We spent an hour having a couple of pints and a good chat with him about everything from polo to skydiving. What a pleasure and a very generous host!
It’s a proper spit and sawdust pub with great beer and a wonderful feel about it. It’s cash only as Steve is done with card machines breaking, and it’s run off solar panels and water from a spring in Exmoor. So a properly off grid drinking experience.
Highly recommend this place if you like a proper old fashioned adult pub from the past: no menu, no bank cards, no kids. One sort of playable piano, four dead ones in the back and a pool table.
There’s one choice of meal on Thursday, pizza on Friday and you can bring your own pudding; it was gammon and parsley sauce this week. Old school! Thanks Steve. You’re a rare breed!
As an aside there’s also camping in the field behind.
Loved stopping in here. It's just around the corner from my off-grid accomodation. Silly me didn't have cash but they took care of me. You can expect some cash in the mail!!! So come prepared with cash. I haven't laughed this much in a pub since I found something similar in Donegal. This is what England is all about. Great ale, atmosphere and service. (Thanks you yo Claire as well, the best bar keep ever!)
*No food on the night I visited but it didn't detract at all. I'd come back to this area just because of this pub.
Popped in one afternoon as it was near to where I thought I was staying for the weekend (turns out the postcode I was given was completely wrong, but how fortunate in the end). Was made to feel so welcome by everyone I met (including the cat and dog!). The beer was excellent, the natter even better. Love that there is a camping field at the back too, I will definitely be back!
Holidaying 5 minutes down the road, heard there was an Open Mic and popped along. Met the landlord and a bunch of locals outside and was immediately drawn into warm conversation and welcome. Borrowed a guitar and had a fantastic evening!
Fantastic remote Inn within exmoore national park. Serves ale straight from the barrel. Very friendly service. Dog friendly. Has a pool room and a camping field. Highly recommended ???? ???? ????
I wish there were 10 stars.. camped here while cycle touring Exmoor. Was made so welcome. What a fantastic pub!
Great atmosphere, loads of history. If you feel important this will remind you that you are not. This is how pubs should be. Helps if you wear a wig and out of fashion clothes.
Stopped off to escape the rain while cycling past. Had a nice chat with the crew that was in there. Its out the way location only adds to its appeal.
