This was a surprise ???? birthday dinner for my husband. It was a fantastic night, he had no idea where we were going.
Gluten free catered for, no problem
Previously known as Balthazar's, the newly refurbished and very modern Nina's is owned and run by chef and superb host, Nina Buck. Wide range of beers, spirits and wines served alongside superb tapas style food, Nina's is great for lunch or dinner. Menus vary but always excellent and pricing competitive. Well worth a try. Free local on-street parking after 6..pm and car parking not far away in municipal car parks other times.
SOME WOULD LIKE THIS PLACE, I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED, IF I WANTED TAPAS FROM ICELAND I WOULD HAVE GOT MUM TO GO THERE!
I had high hopes for Nina's. It's called a wine bar and bistro, mmm, sounds good. The reviews I read on Google sounded good. They do tapas, so my wife should be happy. Holt's a nice place, can't go wrong I thought. Or can I?
Nina's is snuck down a side lane, easily missed, maybe we should have kept walking. Let's get on with this. The welcome was I felt slightly reluctant but still a welcome. Two other couples were seated. I should have realised my mistake on picking up the menu which was laminated with a burn mark on it.
We eyed tapas on the menu, nothing exciting but should satisfy us we thought. We ordered some wine, which was actually pretty good and there the quality ends.
I actually said after ordering our food and waiting at least 20 minutes before cutlery found its way to us, that I thought it was a good sign and that the food should all be prepared fresh. Maybe I shouldn't have said that.
After a lengthy time the food arrived. Think Christmas party nibbles in Iceland, the prawn tails in pastry with sweet chilli sauce, Nina's gave us 3 for just under £5. Then prunes wrapped in bacon, otherwise known as Devils on Horseback - 4 for just under £5, that were quite tasty but let's not get too excited. Then chicken wings in garlic and honey sauce, I think they might have been more than £5, sounds great, but they were more like frozen Southern fried chicken with pepper, I couldn't taste any garlic or honey and I wouldn't expect a southern crumb on what should have been a sticky gooey tender wing. Next, chicken and chorizo skewers, I thought they would have been made with manchego but no, they are made with cheddar and the chicken was stringy, I think more than £5 again. Finally, garlic bread, well that was straight from a packet and overcooked at that, around the £3 mark.
In fairness to them, the food was hot, the hygiene was good and I have no concerns about being ill from the food I had. I also think that if you are not bothered by having exciting food you will enjoy Nina's, but to me, the food represented very poor value and did not meet my expectation of an alleged wine bar and bistro.
I couldn't be bothered to take photos, because nothing inspired me to do so, but maybe I should have so you could see how naff it was.
Nina's is a beautiful, romantic little place. I have allergies so I booked in advance and Nina offered to put a special meal on the menu for me.
We enjoyed a relaxed evening meal. The menu was simple but offered a wide choice. The food was delicious and the staff very friendly and helpful.
Dropped in for an early coffee while shopping in Holt recently. Delicious brew, and first class service. Friendly and very welcoming. Highly recommended.
Nina is a lovely person and makes delicious food. The restaurant is beautifully laid out too.All in all an extremely pleasant evening.
went here for lunch, what a great relaxing place this is, the food is outstanding and made fresh, shouldn't really be giving it such a good send up because if people read this, next time we go it could be that full we wont get in
