This is just so sad. I worked as a chef in this hotel back in the 80's and won some competitions etc with the fantastic head chef and general manager that were there. To see it left to rot is a total disgrace. Mercure, get this wonderful hotel back up and running, we had a fantastic name for our restaurant working hard as the go to for game dishes. I won young seafood chef of the year 1986 whilst here, as well as us winning gold in Torquay international culinary festival, working as a team of 5. Please, get this hotel back up and running for the people of st Alban's and surrounding areas
I had only been at this hotel for a few minutes when it became obvious my stay was not going to be pleasant. I stayed here as part of the U.K. government’s compulsory quarantine for people coming from ‘high risk’ countries. The manager of the facility was particularly very unhelpful. The rooms were dark and dinghy, with musty and old brown carpets. The furniture was old and in bad shape. The room was dusty and didn’t look like it had been cleaned properly. I’m claustrophobic and struggled to adapt to the lack of natural light and I was given a West facing room, despite my specific request prior to arrival and at check in for an East facing room. The hotel was generally old and decrepit. The bathroom was not very clean and there were spiders in the bathroom. Paint was chapping off window sills and walls all around the hotel. The food was also not great, at times it smelled like it had started to go bad or had been frozen for too long before it was thrown into a microwave. I cant believe I paid £2235 for this place, it was definitely a ripoff.
The worlds most highly underrated guest house. Featuring Chefs that only Wolfgang Puck and Gordon Ramstein could compete with. Hotel staff were helpful, friendly and extremely well spoken. The only thing missing from this amazing complex is a golf course. Leisure facilities were extremely clean. The pool and Jacuzzi always at the perfect temperature. Gym was complete with state of the art facilities. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to use any of these.||||Nice rocky beach, pretty clean and not to overcrowded. The best time is before 10 am on weekdays. Some cafes on the seafront offer great breakfast. Just a four hour flight from Heathrow airport. very nice for swimming.||||Car park is rather large quite adequate for roughly 4 coaches, 2 Vito’s and 94 cars. Featuring an amazing and extremely round roundabout with beautiful shrubbery.||||I would also highly recommend visiting in the winter months as the skiing is amazing at that time of year. The landscape is mind blowing. Surrounding area is really special and amazing for mountaineering and just a short flight from away.||||Lots of love ||Security Steve
Went here after the Harry Potter tour, for a night stay arranged by my parents for a birthday surprise. The reception staff were really friendly and helpful from the get go. The room was amazing, plenty of space and well looked after and clean. I used the pool while I was there really well kept and clean again with friendly staff on hand to help out. The meal we had that night was good and the staff even sorted out a birthday cake for me which was a lovely surprise. In all the hotel was top quality and the staff were really friendly and helpful. Will defferntly be recommending to friends and family who go to Watford.
I had to isolate here for 3 weeks for work and when I found out it was a Mercure Hotel, I was really excited as I have heard really good things. However, it was not what I was expecting. The room was filthy, the phone didn’t work, and the food was awful. They didn’t seem to have any concept of vegetarian, veganism, gluten free, alternative milk or nut allergies. I myself am a vegetarian and I notified them of this before arrival. However, more than half of my meals contains meat. When I told the staff this each day, they would apologise agitated and return half an hour later with a cold vegetarian meal. A friend of mine with a nut allergy was given a meal full of nuts, another friend was given soup with part of a corroded whisk in it, oftentimes the food was uncooked, cold or just plain inedible. I have never written a bad review in my life, in fact I often try to see the positives in each place I visit, but seeing that we had to isolate, we relied so heavily on one thing after a long day at work; a nice cooked meal; and that was not what we received. The staff were on the whole very nice and tried to meet the high demands of visitors, but I feel that with the sudden influx of new visitors, they struggled around cope. My room smelt of smoke, there were cobwebs, dust and stains everywhere, and I was constantly having to kill silver fish everyday in both my bathroom and all up the walls of the room itself. That’s not a good sign of a clean dry place. So for all of the above reasons, I would not recommend staying here, nor will I ever be staying here again in the future.
My experience of the Noke hotel is limited to attending a Wake there so I can only speak to what I found on that occasion. The building is well maintained outside, white and immaculate. The car parking is good and the parking area is also maintained well. Inside the hotel is clean, warm and very comfortable. The staff were polite and efficient. Our party had a pleasant room provided for our exclusive use. The buffet lunch was excellent; everything was beautifully fresh and appetising. The sandwiches and snacks were nicely presented, imaginative and catered for both meat eaters and vegetarians. There were plenty of signs to help you navigate from place to place. I really have no fault to find.
We stayed there ahead of a wedding elsewhere, The spa facilities are actually clean, modern and not falling apart. The rooms have everythign they need and the superior far big enough for a few days with a little one. The staff I encountered were all friendly and were happy to chat. The food wasn't great and was incredibly overpriced. I would recommend eating elsewhere.
We were there for a funeral reception this afternoon and our first visit. Very convenient to reach, straight off the Noke roundabout. Parking easy and there is blue badge facilities too. Small and intimate and felt very welcoming. Staff young and attentive.
The toilets were clean and smelt lovely - so important - but I would say, the larger lady could have a bit of a squeeze in the cubicle!!
The sandwiches were a good selection and afternoon tea/coffee very good.
All in all excellent first experience of a Mercure, although the prices could be high ... not sure, so check them out. Had a light, fresh feel to the hotel atmosphere.
