The views of the sun setting over the Mekong River and Laos are spectacular. The thatched bamboo huts at the front of the bar/restaurant are a perfect location to sit with a drink to relax and watch the river.
The owners of the bar have sublet the food aspects due to difficulties in retaining reliable chefs. The menu is very limited to local Thai dishes and a variety of steaks. The chicken steak I had was fine as was the seafood noodle salad and the beer was cold.
Apart from our guesthouse on the banks of the river at the other side of town and cyclists making their way down the river, Phon Phisai is not a great magnet for Western tourists. So there are few bars and restaurants for foreigners. If you are in town this is a great place to watch the sunset and chat with some of the local expatriots.
Good western food in Phon Phisai. Owner is British married to a Thai woman. Very friendly atmosphere. Popular hangout for foreigners. English spoken, bilingual menu. We ordered a burger to compare it to the ones at Western Food across town. This one was less expensive but definitely not as good--meat was lean and chewy, I think it's the store-bought frozen patties you can get at Makro or Big C. But the flavor was OK. We had a salad on the side and that was quite good.
Update-they got a new cook and a new menu. They now no longer carry the beef burger. We ordered the pork burger, but the pig flavor was a bit too strong for our taste, so we'll probably stick to "Western Food" for burgers. In their defense, they are still in the process of getting new suppliers, so we'll see how it pans out.
