I had been admiring Maya’s bakes on Instagram for years now, so to finally get my hands on them via a bricks and mortar bakery was so exciting. Everything looked incredible but the cookies and the buns were particularly sensational, the latter still being warm when I bought it.
If you ever find yourself strolling through the bustling streets of Brixton, a curious aroma might just tickle your nostrils and lead you by the nose to MAYA Bakehouse. This isn’t just any bakery; oh no, this is the middle-class crack den of sourdough. The moment you take that first bite of their crusty, perfectly tart sourdough, you’ll understand why locals queue up faster than you can say “artisanal.” It’s the kind of addiction that whispers sweet nothings of wild yeast and hydration percentages in your ear, urging you to ditch your supermarket loaf for something a bit more… intoxicating.
Walking into MAYA Bakehouse, the vibe is unmistakably Brixton chic with a splash of sourdough sophistication. The clientele? Let’s just say if Birkenstocks and Patagonia had a love child, it would be chilling out here, sipping a single-origin flat white. Wearing these brands seems almost like a rite of passage; a uniform that screams, “I know good bread and I care about sustainable fashion.” The air is thick not only with the scent of baking bread but also with discussions about the latest organic market and yoga retreats.
The loaves here aren’t just baked; they’re crafted with the kind of care and obsession that would make a drug lord blush. Each loaf is a gateway drug to another, leading you down a deliciously doughy rabbit hole. Before you know it, you’re not just a casual bread eater; you’re a sourdough evangelist, preaching the gospel of MAYA to anyone who will listen.
In all, MAYA Bakehouse isn’t just a bakery. It’s a lifestyle choice, a community hub, and perhaps the most addictive thing in Southwest London that’s still legal. Pop in for a loaf, and you might just find yourself wondering how you ever lived without their sourdough in your life. Just beware of the side effects: you might start thinking that owning five different types of sourdough starter is perfectly normal.
The bakes here are amazing and are genuinely some of the nicest I’ve had in London, but this place could be so so much nicer with better service. I’ve given it several chances and each time the service is frosty and like you being there / asking any questions about the food is a massive inconvenience (and I’ve only ever been when it’s been quiet). Such a shame because it has the potential to be such an amazing little bakehouse but the service really lets it down.
Thank goodness for Maya’s! The most delicious sourdough and sweet treats. I wake up on a Saturday morning and jump out of bed to go and get the porridge bread, it’s absolutely divine. The best Sourdough in SW London. Lovely people too ☺️
Maya's bakehouse is becoming one of my favourite bakeries in London! Everything we've tried so far has been incredible - the French onion soup bun (super delicious), Pistachio & Rhubarb tart (only available Fri & Sat), Tiramisu cake (again... amazing), and their sourdough is second to none! Their coffees are great also, and I tend to be picky with my coffee, and everyone working there are so friendly and kind! I'll give it 10 stars if I can. ❤️
The best cakes you can buy in the Brixton area. My favourite however is the Rye Bread. It lasts all week and I can tell they use only the best ingredients. Also they stock the finest butters, milk, egg and olive oil. They have it all.
The best sourdough in Brixton! I’ve been enjoying Maya’s vegan loaves with flavours like cranberry & walnut / sweet corn / wholemeal & rye for years. Oh and her focaccia too! Thrilled to see she finally has a charming bakery to match her personality ????????
Absolutely sensational bread- in a world filled with overpriced sourfauxs, Maya’s delivers quality and flavour in bags. Inventive flavour combinations, high quality produce and all baked on site. So pleased to be in walking distance, but good enough to travel for. Do not pass by without sampling the spiced bun.
