Best KPortal Reviews

We had booked 2 Executive rooms for the 4 of us (2 couples) and they didn't disappoint. Very spacious rooms, elegantly appointed and overlooking the front gardens. The staff was great. We took our evening meal in the pub/lounge and the food and choices were very good. The bartender was a real card and gave us plenty of advice as to what to see and do. Breakfast the next day was very good as well.
Pros:||- Location; easy walking distance to the town of Tain||- Ample parking in the gravel/grass area out front of the hotel||- Pleasant staff; everyone smiled and tried to be helpful||- Good internet (in our room it was very strong, not so good in other rooms per our traveling companions) ||- Breakfast; buffet and made-to-order eggs, etc. ample and well prepared||- Dining room/dinner; well-prepared entrees with a nice menu||- Hotel bar; small, quaint, cozy, and friendly||||Cons:||- Very old hotel, much in need of a facelift/refresh throughout although it had lots of "character" and very beautiful woodwork throughout||- Room:|| - Bathroom dirty (extensive mold/mildew on shower walls in tile grout (dark black lines visible as soon as you enter the bathroom)), open joints and cracks in the wall at floor baseboard and bottom of the tub; sink had several hairline cracks||- beware of hot water at scalding temps from all taps|| - Room only set up for single occupancy when reserved for a couple (towels, service items, etc. missing for second person)|| - Bed had a very hard mattress, very hard and unpadded||- Problem at check-in: || - We made our reservation through Booking.com on April 12th for our September stay, and paid fully in advance on Aug 20th, upon arrival we were advised our reservation had been canceled on June 20th (but our full payment was processed by booking.com on 8/20!!???), finally they "found" us a room for our 3-day stay, later advised "they had found the problem that caused this misunderstanding" (we experienced a very tense time when we were waiting to see if we would even have a room after we arrived at the end of a full day of air and car travel from the US!)||- Housekeeping was fairly non-existent, the room was not cleaned at all during our stay, had to hunt down staff to get towels, etc. when needed (to be fair, we were advised at check-in that housekeeping would be only on request???).||- Hallway smoke doors were kept closed constantly (probably a good practice given the age of the building) and hall lights were often turned off in the early evening making the hall to our room very dark to traverse by the light from hall windows only; yes energy conservation is important, but not by turning out lights when guests are still using hallways, etc.||||Overall we were disappointed in the poor cleanliness of our room and the poor preparation for our use of the room (towels, etc. missing); although some of these are little things that were corrected on request, it was the sum of the issues that made it particularly unsatisfactory especially considering that the rooms were not inexpensive. The staff there were universally friendly and pleasant, really nice people ! We very much wanted to love the place, but we have to be honest in our review for those like us who may be considering a stay in the future.
This was such a great place to stay! The food was delightful and had a great variety. The service was impeccable and everyone was so friendly! Our room was cozy and I love the color scheme. My only complaint is that it is time for new mattresses. The bar was charming and the grounds were well kept. They even have a castle cat named Lucky.
We spent one night of our North Coast 500 Trip at Mansfield Castle. It's location was a little strange, but I guess that over the years land nearby has been sold off for development. However, it's not overlooked at all and the building is very imposing and baronial.||We were greeted by 2 lovely ladies who couldn't have been more helpful, the bedroom was huge, very stately home and whilst it could be referred to as dated it was very much in keeping with the property, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom amazing.||The waiting staff were so helpful, I have various allergies and they really went out of their way to ensure that I had a really enjoyable dinner - clearly the food was cooked to order and I was able to have exactly what I wanted with a few tweeks - granted I had told them when I booked about the allergies. ||The food was beautifully prepared and everyone in our party (5 in total) agreed. The Whisky Bar is extremely well stocked with a huge choice, plenty of locally-sourced gin as well.||Excellent value for money and a very enjoyable stay.
This Hotel is not as described in their website, misleading to say the least and a total con. This was the most expensive accommodation we paid for during our NC500 trip and by far the worst........a rip off to the point that we never stayed! As we were leaving, I asked the owner about a refund, who replied we’d need to request it through Booking.com. Tried that and tried contacting him since to no avail which I suspected would be the case. It's not the money but the principle being potential hotel guests need to be made aware! Attitude of the staff complaining about foreign guests and having to be there for cover from their sister hotel in Tain…..very unprofessional. Turned out the guests were complaining about the heating in their rooms not working, not an unreasonable request which seemed to annoy the staff. Again, shocking and completely unprofessional to discuss this with other guests! On arrival we were told there was no food tonight although advertised it had a restaurant. Please see a few images of the room we were offered particularly the bathroom, not including the two abandoned cars in the car park. The room was musty, bathroom dirty, bath panel cracked, sealant hanging off, dirty sink and lots of mould....truly disgusting. Walking through the hotel to the room, there was also unpleasant smell about the place. Walked into the bar area and noticed the smell of stale alcohol…..horrible. It's the first time I've refused to stay anywhere, it was truly shocking! Hotel in dire need of a complete refurbishment. Owner hasn't a clue, you have been warned!!
Was warmly welcome upon arrival and had delightful interaction with the staff for the entire stay. Mansfield Castle is a wonderful old building, but could use a little TLC on it's bar area. Cannot fathom why there's been an additional 'nautical' theme (fishing nets and shells tacked to doors and walls) added to a Victorian bar? With the addition of the sign on the street, it's clear they're trying to run up trade for the bar/kitchen but this really seems strange. The rooms were immaculate, the service was impeccable and the breakfast were one of the best we've ever had.
Comfortable, clean and unpretentious. Super friendly and helpful staff. Amazing food. You can have formal or casual dining and the menu is the sane for both venues. The hotel is a very short walk from the town centre and train station, and is situated close to the A9 if you are driving around the Highlands. Rooms have a trouser press, coffee making facilities and a laundry service if needed. Very quiet rooms at night. Breakfast was excellent.
Recently had a stay and was looking forward to staying here when driving up the driveway as the building looked fabulous. Was greeted by some very friendly staff but from there the stay went down hill rapidly. The room was very dated and probably hadn't seen the sight of a paint brush for decades. The shower was in the bath but positioned about 4 feet high and so you had to bend down to be able to get wet. The mattress was like a board and again had probably been on the bed for decades. There wasn't any heating in the room at all and I ended up having to sleep with my clothes on as it was absolutely freezing. To sum up, a beautiful building with dreadful bedrooms but run by lovely staff whose fault it isn't that the owners refuse to spend any money on this place. Very expensive for as well, do some research and stay in some very lovely alternative accommodation nearby for a similar or better price.
