My 1st experience at a Nigerian restaurant.....what a surprise!!
Very nice food, well made and adequately priced, with generous portions. Ordered ahead so our meals were more or less ready as expected.
Service all done with a friendly smile, with no rush for us to leave.
Being as English as I am, I chose a mildly spiced dish which was very, very tasty indeed.
I'd only say, if the menu could be clarified a bit, it'd be a good help in ordering.
Other than that, highly recommended.
The food was very delicious!! Today I had my first experience in this restaurant with the Nigerian cuisine and it was awesome :D
I got some help with ordering and I can really recommend the beef stew and the spinach stew. The staff was very friendly!
Mama Calabar in London is no fluke. De food justifies de name of this restaurant. Several Nigerian varieties & delights to choose from. All delicious & served fresh & steaming hot. Even local side chops like poof poof, chin chin, etc available. Located in a quiet neighbourhood, Hendon. Just about 250 metres to de train station. Furthermore, haven't seen a neater & well set up restaurant in recent times. Everything sparkling & in order (including de convenience. U can also peep into de kitchen & withness de same cleanliness & organisation. Chilled Nigerian lager present. Limited outdoor seating is available, especially for de revellers. Guess u know wat I mean!
Definitely the worst customer service experience I’ve ever had. Waiter blatantly refusing to serve my partner the assorted meat with rice as it was because she was white and he concluded that she cannot handle spicy Nigerian food. Started by asking me where my partner was from (partner was at the table and he didn’t even look at her) then he insisted he will make the food milder so she can handle it. Back and forth about 4/5 times before he finally went away with the order…
Had the suya and moi moi for starter, the beef suya was actually good and moi moi was okay.
The worse experience ever. Ordered beef suya just to test the quality. The meat was dry ( microwaved to death) and tasted stale. We left after a few bites ( waste of £15 and £5 parking) We struggled to rid our mouths from the stale, rotten taste from the meat. Never again. Most disgusting experience, ever
The food was wholesome. But the decor is a little dated and atmosphere flat for a Saturday.
So, this is my 1st Time in many years going to Mama Calabar.
I forgot to ask his name Front of house gentleman not sure if it was the owner was super nice, polite and welcoming. I took particular notice because most times when you go to African restaurants Customer service and been warm to customers is not a priority .He even helped with charging my phone and headphones and would even bring my phone when it rang like 5 x????
Restaurant was clean and air-conditioned so that was nice.
So food prep wait time wasn't long which is good
I ordered White rice egusi and fish and a bottled water i had puff puff as an appetizer dont judge me I was ravenous when I arrived and I did Suya takeaway as well. I ate the Suya layer in the evening and I think its worth the £13 Total of my food came up to 45.50
only reason I didn't give 5* is because the sauces is a bit on the steep side and the quantity the plain egusi is 7 pounds and the fish 15!! now if it were a whole fish I would understand.Mine came with 2 slices of fish I was too hungry to remember to take pictures.. In this Cost of living Crisis I feel customers should get more fish definitely..puff puff as well at 3.50 for 5 tiny balls.
I will definitely come again!!
The atmosphere and service was great. Good customer relations but the pricing was too expensive and the quality of the food was poor. I spent 100£ and I regret wasting my money. The garnished snail was too expensive and very small. It was just onions they put, very small sized 4 snails for 22£. Other foods are tasteless. The swallow I ordered was very hard and not well done. I’m not trying to rubbish their hard work, just sharing my experience for them to improve.
