It is great eating here. They have the traditional dishes associated with Indian takeaways but appear to have dishes that are authentic (see my pictures). I have just got home from a great meal there and I am sorry that my stomach was not large enough to eat everything we ordered!
Probably the best rice I've ever had; all of the food was amazing! Great service and an excellent menu.

Top quality food and excellent service. I rarely go anywhere else. In a quiet village with easy parking. The restaurant is not the normal curry house but a mixture of perfectly cooked South Indian dishes. Very difficult to select a best dish so every visit you are guaranteed a culinary choice of dishes. And the Indian beer is on tap and us ice cold. Enjoy.
My family have been coming to Brightlingsea for the past 7 years and always call in at Kovalam. We have just come back from probably the best meal we have had there so far - intense flavours and friendly staff. There was a group eating there at the same time as us that were on their 3rd consecutive night of eating there!
We have always liked Kovalam restaurant but now the food is even more delicious, in addition to a very friendly and attending service. From what I understand they serve authentic South Indian food. We highly recommend it!
Truly disappointing, I have registered on google just to write this review, having eaten there when I first moved to Brightlingsea it was once good. The last three meals have been very poor so much so that I could not tell two dishes apart. A massive shame!
Disappointing read reviews and went on peoples good comments starters were cold chicken tikka starter was awful mains delicious. Never been charged for sauces for papadoms in an Indian before very expensive won't be going again
