The hotel is well located at the entrance to Champex. It has beautiful views from the dining room and from the guest rooms. The guest room was small but generally pleasant with a corner wraparound balcony and a private bathroom. The bed was comfortable. Dinner was very delicious and breakfast was great.||||The public areas of the hotel are a bit of a shambles, but this is a matter of taste.||||Unfortunately our entire experience was colored by the extremely unfriendly host/owner, an older gentleman who refused to speak any English and responded to our attempts at French by speaking very rapidly and dismissively. When we arrived he was mixed up about our check-in and gave us the wrong key. He would not tell us where our luggage (delivered separately) was located. At dinner there were four tables of customers and he offered wine/beer/sparkling water to each table -- unfortunately everyone discovered after dinner that he was charging an exorbitant price for the wine, and even for the water! At breakfast all the guests were talking about the ridiculously overpriced wine they had paid for the night before. Generally he was unpleasant to interact with, which puts the place in a negative light. Cannot recommend.
I cannot say anything good about our stay at Hotel Le Belvedere. It started during dinner when the owner came over to our table talking at me in French, which I do not speak. My wife and I were eating with another couple. The husband who spoke French advised me, he was asking for my room key. When he returned interrupting our dinner a second time to give me back the key, our dinner companion asked, “Is there a problem with their room”? The owner answered, “None of your business, my wife who speaks english will explain to him later.” After dinner, I asked the wife but she ignored me, so we were never given an explanation.||Then the next mourning before breakfast, I stopped at the front desk to pay for the half liter of house red wine we ordered the night before. The owner repeated half liter, then wrote on a piece of paper 15 euro. When I opened my wallet, he held up his hand, looked at the ceiling, then crossed out the 15 and wrote 25? I repeated half liter questioningly and he nodded yes, so I reluctantly paid. At breakfast I mentioned this episode to another couple, who informed me they too had a half liter of the house wine two nights earlier and were charged 15 euros. After breakfast, I challenged the owner about the wine charge, he became belligerent insisting 25 euros. I gave up and left feeling very upset and completely taken advantage of.
This hotel was just wonderful, we booked it as an option to a refuge on one of our nights. The view was amazing and Irene was the perfect host. She took great care of us and made sure we did not leave out hungry for our next day on the trail.|
