It's okay.. but it's not the real stone, it's a reproduction.. so slightly disappointed. We thought we were going to see something thousands of years old and experience a sense of awe.. instead, there was an information plaque about it, a track leading to a gate surrounded by mud and then a reproduction.. a good one, but a reproduction nonetheless.
Signposted, kinda.
Park in the layby and follow the path through the gate and walk down 150 yards or so.
This is a replica stone as the original is in Edinburgh.
BUT, credit to the modern craftsman for this as it is still very impressive and considerably large. It would have taken some time to do.
A fine piece of art. Both the replica and the original.
Clach Baile a' Chnuic, the Hilton Of Cadbol Stone, is a modern replica of an intricate Class II Pictish Stone from around 600-843CE. The Stone depicts a Noblewoman riding a horse with a riding party, Mirror and Comb, Celtic Knots and elaborate patterns, entwined animals, the Double Disc and Z-Rod, and Crescent Moon and V-Rod on one side, and the other side depicts a large Celtic Cross, Celtic Knots, and religious symbols.
Very fine replica of the original stone situated in an atmospheric hollow beside Hilton. A good contrast with the Shandwick stone situated on a high spot overlooking the bay.
Beautiful, peaceful place to visit, and some lovely walks along the beach
This is a historic place where once there was a Chapel possibly named after Mary, the mother of Jesus. It's thought that it was built around the time when the Picts of Scotland converted to Christianity. Around 900ad. The site is better accessed going through the town, although a walk from the Upper roadside can be found. The remains of the ruin lie buried underground, but its general shape can be seen. This is likely to keep preserved what little remains until a time they can redig to fully preserve. There is a large, unprotected, more modern stone as a memorial there with a storyboard. It is free to access and park at this time.
Good signs around the area, a nice place for a little walk. The stone is a replica but its great to see. The earth works near by of a chaple I did not expect before I came here but it was a pleasant surprise. The site is semi accessible but for the majority of disabled users it would be in accessible. There is a sign near the top of the hill by the road that overlooks the stone and Chapel site this is the only truly accessible part.
There is something magical about this place. The replica is made with great care and expertise.
