Best KPortal Reviews
The hotel is very well situated between Matlock Bath and Matlock (only a brisk 10 minute walk to Matlock centre). It's a spacious and clean hotel with excellent parking. The attic room was also spacious and the bathroom a particular highlight - good hot water and a decent shower. Beds very comfortable and linen/towels provided very clean. Great supply of teas, coffees, hot choc and biscuits. Decor tasteful and the wardrobe/storage more than adequate. Cannot comment on quality of breakfast as didn't opt in - very expensive at £15 a head and very little on what it actually consists of. Same with evening menu - not sign of one (in reception or the room). Now so far this review would lead me towards a 4 star rating but - and there is a but. The staff who 'met' us at reception seemed preoccupied and disinterested in the business of hospitality - we felt like a disturbance to him - certainly interrupted his smoking right at the main entrance with one of his mates. Later he could be found entertaining two of his mates at the reception desk and seemed oblivious to any paying guests. Walking in and out of any building surrounded by nicotine clouds is not a good look or smell - really shoddy. I assume the CCTV must have a blind-spot (unless he is one of the owners). Anyway a decent stay marred by bad impressions and cancer-clouds at the main entrance.
We had a short stay here, our room was nicely decorated, a sofa in the room had some pretty heavy stains! Bathroom was very nice, but shower is mains fed, and not a power shower, so a little lack luster. Overall a nice hotel, main good point is its location to Matlock, which is a short walk away! Parking excellent ???? Breakfast was offered but a bit too pricey at £15 per head. I can recommend a stay here though, as it's an ideal base to explore Matlock and the Heights of Abraham and offers a decent stay. ????
Booked by phone and charged far more than any prices on website. We expected a good experience at this 'luxury boutique hotel' Unfortunately it was the worst hotel experience we have ever had.||•On arrival nobody around to check us in. When lady came she clearly had no idea of how to meet and greet guests.||•At check-in we had to select and pay in advance for dinner and breakfast. ||•Room was uncomfortable. Furniture looked pretty but very low bed, only a few inches off the floor, and couch unsuitable for more mature adults. Bed was 4-poster in style with white netting drapes. Drapes blocked the view of TV!||•bathroom spacious but poorly finished.||•No hairdryer in room. Asked for one and the hairdryer brought was broken!||•Dinner - a lasagne and a curry- were obviously ready meals and tasteless. Expensive for what they were!||•Breakfast was a disappointment too. Poor quality bread, croissants, yogurts. Cooked food - eggs benedict and a full English - were poor quality ingredients, cold and tasteless. Very slow self-service tea/coffee machine. Very expensive at £15 each. ||•No sleep on second night due to loud arguments in reception between staff and a disgruntled guest. Staff fuelled the arguments with their defensiveness and care' attitude and the noise went on into the early hours until police called.||•In the morning there was no water supply. Not the hotel's fault as the whole area without water. However, staff did not deal well with this situation. We asked if there was any water available and were given a small glass of tap water (run before all water stopped). When we asked if any more was water available we were told none. No complimentary bottled water available. No way to flush toilet, wash or brush teeth.||•At check-out we were told no refund available for our unsatisfactory stay as the issues were not their fault. No apologies given or sense of understanding of our disappointment. Just defensiveness. ||•Staff at this hotel have no idea about customer service nor do they care.||•They are purely out to take customer's money - as much as possible and always in advance!||Sadly, we cannot recommend this hotel at all.
Brilliant hotel in a great location. We had a family room which had a great view of the river and was enormous, newly decorated and spotlessly clean. The bar was a lovely place to relax with a drink and a board game and the staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
The manager or owner was very welcoming. He seemed to be running it by himself. He checked us in and kindly advised that the happy hour had 5 minutes left so we quickly dropped our bags in our room and headed back to the bar and he then went behind the bar to serve our drinks. Later on he came to take our food order and then he brought it to our table later. He was incredibly hard working but very friendly and helpful. The meal was fabulous as well. Our room was compact but we were in the attic room I think. However, everything was clean and tidy and the bed was comfortable. There were big fluffy towels on the bed and there was even a chocolate on top of them both! There were also a generous amount of tea and coffee in the room and two packets of biscuits too. You don't often get that in more expensive hotels.
Gave the rating as poor not because of the actual accommodation which was clean and modern although the tiny wardrobe was stuffed with spare bedding so nowhere to hang anything. Were advised to book our meal as it was 'full house'. When we went into the dining room there was just one other couple there. Hardly bursting at the seams. My husband's lasagne was cold and there was no meat in it. Manager apologised and offered to rectify it but husband had lost his appetite by then. My vegetable curry was nice but was obviously a readymeal. Not once did we see the 'chef' and hardly smelt any cooking. All very odd. We'd opted for eggs Benedict for breakfast. A load of cold sauce dolloped over small poached eggs on baps. It was awkward when paying for the food on leaving but it's too long and complicated to go into (husband's meal not charged). It's a shame as the hotel has obviously had money spent on it but let down by the (we think) absence of a chef. The staff though pleasant enough, to my mind haven't been in the hospitality business very long.
The family ensuite was amazing and newly furbished. We had a drink at the bar and it was pricey. Breakfast was cold, and very disappointing. The service was shocking. I paid for breakfast as part of my booking and the manager said I had to pay again as it was only continental that was free. I had paid for breakfast. She insisted I showed her where it said cooked was free. The receptionist apologised for her boss and we paid up. I would not recommend. This establishment wants the money and doesn't deliver on service.
We booked up for the night so we could stay over after the Christmas Market in matlock. Reception was friendly. Good parking, free WiFi and nice and warm when entering. We were given a very small attic room with en suite shower room. A bit difficult getting into bed with the slope of the ceiling so be careful not to bump head or shoulders. Room was clean and warm.Bedding was clean but mattress was very firm and base creaky so quite uncomfortable .Tv was a bit too small to see from the bed. Kettle in room with tea and coffee. Fan and a heater provided in the room. One chair, a hanging rail for coats. Clean Towels and chocolates left in the room. A little soap, shower gel and shampoo were provided. Bar was nice and relaxing. Good selection of drinks. Nice to see a family run place with their child laughing and playing in the dining area. Booked in for breakfast but skipped it due to us being tired and wanting to get home so can't comment on that. If you just need a place to bed down for one night at a cheap rate then it may be for you. No frills.
